So Kris, can you give us the abbreviated version of everything you've done? I know you've been having lots of issues since you windowed the block but can't remember exactly what all transpired that you need 8 new slugs and all those other parts again.

Is this a stocker or a low compression piston?

Kris, I haven't been on FTE in a while and I thought you had your motor all built up. So are these for a back up or what.

I like name change too. I'd put a smilie face "here" but I am on my phone.

Ok, i'll try to answer everyone's questions here..

Superduty4x4

Fall (9-15-08) threw a rod, a week or two later, bought a truck with a built engine in it, pulled the engine, sold the truck in a trade for a 03 Buell Firebolt XB9r motorcycle, never put a mile on it... Then tore the engine down, did a few things such as high(er) compression pistons, the ones in it were ~12.5:1 and much too low for street driving, i ended up getting 15:1 pistons, the ones you see above, but raw, not coated. I got the truck running, in december/january, but the engine ran like crap, Tony did his best tuning it over the phone however the injectors, well cass messed them up so bad doing the "SHO mod" to them, it was a tuning nightmare. Somewhere in that time range i read some information that maybe my engine was assembled incorrectly, i overlooked a crucial step, so tore it out, and back apart, saw i did in fact put the front 4 rods in backwards, no damage whatsoever. Put it back together after learning my lesson!, and then it sat for a while in february/march as i got my trans redone at BTS while i was down there, also sent the injectors out to swamps to have them fix them, and do their special magic, made the truck run well, but never like i had intended, for the money i had/have in it, it should run it's *** off. I did some hard runs on video, two to be exact, went to pick up the videographer, and went back to his house, and it stalled out. This was on 4-08-09, so trailered it home, and the engine locked up the next day as i went to crank it over. Long story a little shorter, the #4 exhaust valve dropped out, wedged itself between the cylinder and head, not allowing it to spin over TDC. Pulled it all apart, sent all the pistons out to get them ceramic coated, teflon coated on the sides (what you see the black, is teflon, makes them smoother and scuff resistant) They had to get a new piston from Mahle, arrived cracked in the box, wait a week or two for that to come in, then get it profiled and weight matched (balanced rotating assembly), then sent to Jet Hot for the coating, which took about a month, which was a major pain in the ***. Measured some stuff on the block, found out the mains were .006" out of round, had to have it line honed, and the block checked out ok. I had alot of extra time, so i did a few little things here and there as you see in the pictures.

Where we stand now, i got a set of TotalSeal "gapless" rings (no blowby), but they aren't powerstroke specific, so i just got them the correct height, and for a 4.140" bore (.030" over). Well i got them home, checked ring gap etc, went to load the rings on the pistons, and the damn rings are square, and not keystone.. The powerstroke as well as alot of other diesels use a tapered top ring, while the second one is gapless in my instance, the bottom one a normal oil control ring. So, i can't use this top ring, on a set of $337 rings, so i had to buy yet another set of just the keystone rings, they should be here monday. Other than that, EVERYTHING i need is here i believe.

Yes, with the power i am shooting for, i do not trust my stock drivelines, however im not planning on upgrading them until they break, cause that's some expensive chit, (ha, no room to talk), and i made these out of some free pipe my buddy got me, some time, and about $20 of flat plate. I have a setup for the rear i havent posted pics of yet, but it's a pretty slick setup. I saw a guy shoot out and pole vault over a driveshaft sub 450hp, so im making sure shaft is covered!

Edit- after reading it, i realized i never said the reason why the truck never ran like it should have, i believe it was the solid lifter/roller rocker combination.. The rockers were made of billet aluminum, however the spring rate i was using was much to stiff for that usage... i went to sell them and the buyer pointed out that the pivot arm on the rocker was very, very egged out, and the rockers operated very roughly, and there was alot, alot of up and down play on the rocker. So, it was quite possible that my valves, at any given time, were only half, to three-quarters open, and not fully open during operation. No wonder the truck didnt act right, spooled slower than i thought, was extremely smokey, very high temperature running, and didnt roll out like my buddies 500hp 7.3 does, his would have blown mine away in a race as it was. I have enough fuel, nozzles and the turbo for a smokey ~700hp, and im hoping my change to stock hydraulic lifters, stock rockers, and aftermarket pooshrods will get me there..

I'd like to add i had to get a set of new heads, the ones i had up to 2xxx* egt's in that hard run, (how the seat fractured and fell out), and cracked 7 of the 8 cylinders between the valves. So, used heads off a 100k mile stock truck checked out ok, got all the surfaces machined, new bronze guides, and valve job, plus i did a few evenings of port work on them, so we'll see

Wow. Get that rascal running and come on down to RRE. You can embarrass me in the crappy 1/8th. Though for some reason I just can't ever see you doing that.Seriously though, that is because of your luck with that truck. I sure hope it changes. I began to think that truck hates you.

I guess you changed your mind on that common rail. Glad to see you beefing up the 7.3.
Been waiting for a write up like this. Good luck with the monster rebuild!
