when my intake sending unit went out.. everytime id go up hill. all the gas would run away from the sending unit it say im on E but it level out and it start bouncing.. replaced it.. life was good again lol
i was parked on a hill sideways earlier and it showd i had gas , then when i parked on level ground , it showd E........ i reckon ill buy a sendin unit tomorw while im buyin my master cylinder.....
with my sendin unit bad , it want effect me gettin gas or make my truck quit will it? it just runs the gas hand , correct?
Yea it'll be fine. I ran my truck for years with no gas gauge because the float had a hole in it and was full of gas sitting on the bottom the tank showing E all the time. I had to keep up with my mileage. LOL
Yeah you really need a functioning gas hand when gas is expensive, and your truck has low MPG. I used to have a big block Chrysler with a broken gas gauge. I ran out of gas about once a month on average. I kept a can of gas in the trunk.
Make sure it's not just the float first. That's only like $8 Or maybe yours just needs cleaning so it can make good contact while it's doing it's sweeping motion.
If you have to have the whole unit, I'd say check a junkyard. My brother needed a tank and a sending unit. He went up there and they sold him the tank for $50, and threw in the sending unit for free. Just give it a good visual inspection when you go up there, and a lot of junk yards will let you trade it back in for another working one if the part doesn't work (the ones around here do).
Correct me if I'm wrong and it does sound like it could be a sending unit, but isn't the voltage stabilizer on the back of the gauge cluster responsible for smoothing out the bounce in the needle? If you follow the line on the printed circuit it appears that the stabilizer only effects the fuel gauge.
If you needle moves at all no matter what setup you have you will see a difference on the gauge with your truck on different angles and grades. I'm not sure if your only problem is the needle bouncing, if this is the case maybe there is a version of this voltage stabilizer for the aftermarket gauge set.
I put one of these in my truck, it works great with the stock gauge and a 38 gallon tank. Its like $25 shipped. You do have to cut a hole in the tank and do some work but it is the only option for the big tank.
