4 speed with a PTO???

I have a 4 speed with a PTO located on the passenger side. The plate on the PTO is missing but the #'s stamped in its place are
E 3
CI-P-223

The tranny #'s on the drivers side are:
T96-1R
W.G. DIV
N-1
The casting code(?) located near this looks like "H12-3"
I have no clue as to the originality of these parts to my '66 F350 but I am looking to figure out what I have.

You likely have either a Warner T-18 or the NP-435. Here's a handy ID guide.

4 speed with a PTO???

I haven't looked at the tranny much yet but it also has a brake drum/parking prake between the tailshaft and the drive shaft but the linkage is missing. I was hoping to get some information as to what else these gearboxes were in so I can scrounge up the needed parts.

It sounds as thought your mystery tranny is from a large truck, as they have the parking brake mounted as you describe. The PTO was probably used to run a hydraulic pump for a dump. Sorry I can't be of any more help than that.

4 speed with a PTO???

Hi, In my set of 1970 Ford service manuals is a picture of a transmission with the brake set up at the output of the Tx as you discribe. The Tx is a NP 435. I think that this was a common set up for large trucks only as my 1970 F250 has the NP 435 but not this kind of parking brake. As a side note, every M-series large military truck that I have seen also have this kind of parking brake.

The tranny in question is stock for the '66 F-350. Every F-350 with duel rear wheels I've seen in the junk yards has had a hand E-brake located on the passenger side of the tranny. I'm not 100% cetain that the F-350 with single rear wheels got it too. It seemed to have been a 1-ton and heavier deal. F-250's didn't get the hand brake. I believe you have an origanal tranny, not a swapped unit.

Thanks Eric for the information. Since you have seen these in the salvage yards, what would it take for me to get you to send me the linkage from one of these trucks? I really could use several other parts if you are will to do some scouting for me.
I live in Texas and all I can find are the 1/2 ton trucks that have been scavenged to the frame.

4 speed with a PTO???

I'm sorry to say but my info comes from spending 15 years going to the self serve yards and it has been quite a long time since I've seen one. I've got no guarentee that I could find one faster than you. Over the years they seem to get scarcer and scarcer. I may go to the yards in the next couple of weeks but no promises. Sorry and good luck.

Does that 4-spd. have a 1-1/16 O.D. 10-spline input shaft?

If so, it is a (don't get mad at me) "light duty" version of a medium duty tranny. The mediums had a 1-3/8" O.D. input shaft.

If it has the PTO on the driver's side, it is a Warner Gear T-18 or T-19 (the 19 is better--syncro low).

If it has the PTO on the driver's side and a tall aluminum top cover, then it is a New Process Gear model NP435 (probably).

For parts like trannies, transfer cases, axles, etc., watch the "classifieds" at this site...I've gotten screamin' deals on all the above items, here.

LAST EDITED ON 24-Jan-01 AT 09:42 PM (EST)[p]I took this picture out of the 66 shop manual. It very closly resembles my gearbox but the manual is very vague when it comes to identifying the light, medium, or heavy duty items.
I listed the info cast on the case in my first post. If there are any other markings I should look for, let me know.
If anyone has or has access to the linkage show attached to the parkingbrake and drum, please let me know.

That's an NP435; see the tall aluminum top cover and PTO cover on the passenger side (sorry about my earlier post saying the pto cover was on the driver's side)?

Also, watch those Ford manuals pretty closely; Ford used the NP435 and Warner T-18 pretty much interchangeably for a long time, and also freely show pictures of the 435 on T-18 rebuild chapters and vice-versa.

I just got done overhauling a '78 NP435 (negligible changes from your '66), and I'm here to tell you it was dead easy! Overhaul kits were cheap too, from Standardtransmission.com
