All I can is, I want that Jeep. Looks like a lot of fun, that's the kind of stuff I love to do!
I like the idea of building a four banger but have you thought about swapping it for another motor? A V6 would be compact and keep the weight down, and give you an easy 170 horse and 250 foot pounds. You could even build it for more power.
if (read when) i blow this motor up, i'll be looking for a 5.3l, L33...sorry guys i know that's saacriligious around these parts....
L33 is aluminum block / heads, makes 300-320HP, and weighs 100lbs less then a 4.3l V-6
as for wheelin' the four make plenty of power, i also tend to keep it high in the rpm range. Factory red line is 5200, factory peak HP is rated at 5250, rev limiter hits @ 6000 RPM.
I've spent the last 6 years or so bouncing the factory motor off the rev limiter, i'm surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Ha ha! No joke! That must be one tough booger!!
The 5.3L is a good idea in my book. I didn't realize it was so light though, jeez.
That, and the larger V8 willl produce much better torque; and that's what you need for off roading.
I think a 4-BT Cummins would be a cool idea too. It would be different but match the personality of the Jeep!
