There was a thread about that some time back. From what I remember there is no easy way. Maybe just leave them locked and take the couple MPG hit?

Surely you can buy a set of Warn or Milemarker hubs and replace the entire hub and locking assembly. If you are gonna replace them, then just tear into it enough to disengage them and go from there...

Maybe I'm missing something or someone could chime in. My '90 was the same..Stupid plastic part broke and I said to heck with this and changed the entire assembly

i would grab new warn or milemarker hubs, much tougher and you know when you turn the know they are locked or unlocked

hubs are fairly easy only tool i needed was the spindle nut socket other than that i used screw drivers and hex keys the whole way

You guys are missing that this is an '87, which means it has the one-piece flange hubs. You cannot just replace the hubs with off-the-shelf milemarkers. Aftermarket support for this axle is absolutely non-existent.

OP, I'm not sure what parts interchange between your axle and a normal Dana 44, but you can either tear both axles down or just drop the whole thing out and replace it. If you go that route make sure your new gear ratio matches. It shouldn't cost much at all if you get the axle from the junkyard. TTB Dana 44's are a dime a dozen at the yard, you shouldn't pay more than scrap value.

Thanks AndyM, I learned something new today. Disregard what I said earlier keiser blade. I didn't know, and wouldn't want to steer you in the wrong direction.

AndyM is right, I would swap everything out if I you have the time.

Best of Luck!
