Chop top window question
I was going to use the track I took out and make a bracket to mount it inline with the front of the window. Any thoughts on trying this?
Also what did you use for your window chanel runner and window felt?
I had the glass guy come by today and he made a few sugustions, we are going with a tinted glass for the sides and rear and the green tint glass for the front. We are using a gasket for the rear but glueing in the front and flush mounting it.
By window channel runner, I assume you mean the piece the glass sits in and is connected to the manual window movement mechanism( the scissor affair that the handle uses to raise and lower the window). If so, then Mid-fifty sells the one piece version. ( I have a set I don't need).
If you're going with power windows, then you don't need the pieces. The power window kits that many vendors sell have provision to hold the glass.
The big thing with the switch to one piece glass as I/m sure you know is that you need to modify the opening in the door that the glass comes up through as the opening is not straight from front (of the door) to rear. You need to open up the track to make it straight and to make the opening 3/4 inch wide from front to back. Apparently Mid-Fifty sell the pieces but I beleive they are nothing more than 3/4 inch angle iron. They didn't have them when I was trying to order them and couldn't give me a straight answer as to when they might, nor would they put me on a list so I ended up reading what I could on the fix from various sources and then just buying the 3/4 inch angle iron.
Trim the top edge back to about 1/4 inch wide, slot the vertical side to allow you to bend the horizontal surface to fit the slope on the inside edge of the top of the door trace the edge onto the door and cut the door back to allow you to but weld the angle iron into the door. Do the same on the outside edge making sure the opening is 3/4 inch.
Mid-Fifty and others sell the one piece felts to apply to the angle iron after you're done.
Sam Detweil has a good thread on this forum named " Glueing window felt, Help! " that deals with the window felt.
Truck Builder magazine had the best article on this whole thing. I can post the issue number tonight if you like...
Outa here. Off the the biggest car show in this area all summer - Merrickville, Ont. Usually 700 cars - which is huge for the Ottawa Valley. will check back tonight.
Regards,
MF sells the window channel and the felt track, but I suspect you can get those anywhere. I got some newer wipe samples from here, http://www.restorationspecialties.com/
they may have the channel and felts.
gluing the felts (wipes they're called) across the door is a challenge.
Sam
Great I could use some pictures when I am doing this. I will look at mid 50 and see what they have if anything for the 51
Thanks, Mike
Thanks I looked this morning and it looked like they started at 53 but I thought there was someone here that said something about them selling 48-52 stuff.
Did anyone see the TV show Royal Pains this week? They had a sweet 51 on there. I won't tell you how it ended up though I hope it was a stund double.
Mike
