I have seen some posts that suggest new solinoid pack or pump if replacing the torque conveerter. any thoughts?

If you just replace the converter, be sure to flush out the system in case there is debris. Cheap insurance and you probably need a fluid change anyway.
If there was a lot of debris, in the system, it is often hard to clean out the valve body, so some shops will replace that too.
