Pulling front cover

Here I go, front cover is coming off. Might take a couple days, have to juggle work in the mix. Any tips, or suggestions? Is it sealed with gaskets, or RTV ? Harmonic balancer has to come off too? I'm new to diesels, so this well help me get familiar with my truck!
Thank you, C

Here is a link to a workshop manual on line
http://www.thedieselstop.com/faq/949...an/stjmain.htm

Here is a PDF file for the front cover removal:
It says to remove the engine but I think it can be done in the truck...never did one so......
I would remove the radiator and grill for a better look-see

Has anyone here taken off their front cover? I am greatful for the shop manual for sure, but they are quite vague. I'd sure appreciate it. Next day off is next week, so it'll be a couple days before I get back on it. Thank you, C

Chris, I must have missed the reason...Why are you pulling the front cover?

front covers are easy... just like any other engine... a few bolts and your good to take it off... make sure you get the ones that go up from the oil pan too

Rog, the truck won't start, it did not run when I bought it a couple weeks ago. Injectors will not fire due to no oil pressure. I want to see if the oil de-aerator plug has come loose, causing the lack of pressure
thank you, C

the front cover is far from easy and much different than most engines. the oil pickup tube in the oil pan is bolted to the front cover so the pan must be removed which generally requires engine removal from the truck. Some have been able to lift the engine enough to remove the pan but keeping the oil out of the sealer going back on is a pain.

I'm with you, TJ. Ive worked on many gas motors, but this is my first diesel. any idea if HPOP and waterpump has to come off seperate ? I got the truck for a great price, so I don't mind the work, sure wish the oilpan was a bit easier to access though. so am I correct that the oilpan must be removed to completely take off FC?
thank you, C

I think you can leave them both attach but there are some water pump bolts that need to be removed cause it bolts thru the pump and cover into the block I think. I have never done a timing cover I just know the basic idea.

thank you, C
