Hey all first time on this site. I have a 06 XLT 4x4, when i go to start it, it sometimes sounds like when your car is already started and you try to start it again you know. It seems to do this maybe 1 out of 20 starts, but once it does it I wait a sec and try again and it turns over fine. Any advice would be great. Thanks guys.
ya, the bendix gear moves up the starter shaft when the starter spins, engaging the flywheel and turning the engine over to start it. When it sticks, the bendix does not slide up the shaft, The starter just spins, not turning over the engine.
You may be able to take the starter out and spray the bendix gear and the mechanism with white lithium grease. That may keep it from sticking,
anybody else have an idea how to keep a bendix from binding or sticking?
X2 on the replaceing starter, if your going to pull it out to lube it and that might fix it for now, you might as well put a new one in. Just my thoughts.
Plus the gear could be damaging the flywheel gears if it's not completely engaging them as it seems like it might be from your post. I would have that replaced. If you do it yourself, be aware that some starters need to be shimmed to get that engagement just right, and some don't.
