How HD is this trans? With proper cooling, can it pull a 14K 5th wheel in OD? ( at the local Ford Dealer, out of 4 mechanics, I get a 50/50 split on yes & no). Is that the same trans they used to put in Motorhomes of that time frame? Can the E4OD be replaced with a manual trans, or will the lack of E4OD commands, mess up the engine commands? Thanks, Bob
First of all let me say I have no experiance with the E40D...but looking at my 1989 Ford owners guide it recommends a 4:10 gear for up to 12,500 lb. trailer weight and a 4:63 gear for up to 16,000 lb. trailer weight (you'd need the 4:63 gearing according to the chart) the ratios are for a 460 engine. Looking at the chart for a manual transmission it shows the trailer weight being REDUCED by a 1,000 lbs. (11,500 lb. max.) with the 4:10 gearing.
I don't believe the 4:63 gearing was offered in a F250/350 chassis, it was probably a F450/550 series. Deen

Also depends on what model truck you have, I don't think you mentioned it. A 150 probably won't make it but a 250 or 350 and up with proper gears etc would probably work. Also depends on the engine, a 302 probably would be suffering and maybe even the 351.
My 94 F250 4x4 460 with E4OD and 4.10 gears is rated for something like 12,000 I think, I would have to check the owners manual to be sure.
