I have a 1990 xlt Lar. F-250 longbed diesel. I recently picked up a fith wheel and and a few days ago was the first time i pulled anything with this particular truck. Everything on the truck is original and it has the 7.3L ford international engine in it. The problem i am having is that when i'm pulling the trailer my truck has no power to take off or accelerate. the only way i can get it to 65-70mph is on a straight away, but anytime i start to go uphill the truck can't maintain the speed, or if i am at a stop and taking off into any kind of uphill slope the truck isn't able to go very fast at all and sometimes won't even pick up enough to get into the next gear. On a small slope near my home i was only able to reach 25mph will the pedal on the floor!
any suggestions on what the problem and/or the solution may be would be greatly appreciated
thx
How many miles on the truck? What rear end ratio? What size and weight trailer? It may need to have the timing checked. Or it might be time for new injectors (100k+). And keep in mind that without a turbo it won't have a ton of power, but it should get it moving.
info is a big help because with my truck i cant even get to 70 if i wanted to. Gearing and transx wont let me. Fill in Dave Sponaugle's questions and a lot more help will be available.

I could hit 70mph but maintaining it would be bad idea. a good cruising speed is about 55mph. C6 3sp and gearing is the issue, if i rolled in new gears in front and back it would be a very different story. It just gets too revved up when at anything above 60.
I dont have turbo and i towed a two horse trailer with two horses in it and two yards of pea gravel in the truck bed, no major loss of power. He has a mechanical problem.

i understand what you saying with it being full capable of pulling without a turbo and having a mechanical issue but if he is going to be pulling a 5th wheel or any kind of substantial loads and being able to pull a hill i would say its time to look for a turbo.but he does need to do a little tune up which im sure thats all it is.fuel filter with a good diesel kleen treatment would probably make one heck of a difference.his gearing could be an issue as well.

We are saying the same thing. I am pointing out that i can pull and haul a combined 10000lbs with an old idi non turbo up hill with no problems. My point being that if he cant pull a 5th wheel up hill there is a mechanical problem, gearing, fuel, air etc etc. We both are dead on and yes a turbo would be good but only if it is right on from the get go, adding a turbo to the problem engine wouldnt be a good idea. I get what you are saying, you gettin what i'm spittin? LMAO hahaha

you have the 4.10s dont you?
it runs 3300 with stock tires to go 70 with them.

I have no idea but with the shavings i saw in the rear i am needing to probably re do the whole front and rear end soon. The seal on the rear is leaking at the shaft too. I would like to gear it better so 70 wouldnt be as big of an issue. That way when i transfer i can save a few bucks while driving. I would be pulling horses anyway so 55 would be about as high as i go. Better gear ratio would be easier though. It has so much low end, i can put it into 4Low and let it go up hill on its idle speed haha
