351 Modified engine

On my last trip to Melville. I saw a 351 M engine sitting in the back of a truck box. It was at the Melville scrap yard. I think he be willing to sell it.
The paint on the engine is faded from blue to a olive drab green. Been exposed to the sun. I saw it sitting there when I was climbing along a wood beam on the ground. I noticed it had large valve covers and saw the Ford on the covers. So took a closer look and saw the sticker on the left velve cover and the sticker identified the motor as a 351 M .
A much sought after engine for making a power house racing engine. SO if anyone is interested, he probally sell it to you cheap. They are trying to clean up the yard to close it down and retire.
If anyone does go for it. It is sorta in the middle of the yard and there is a path that they can drive thier truck to it and lift it out to you. Dale is the guys name and he is a chrysler man, so Fords are not his thing.
I never mentioned to him what he had there.
I think if I ever have to go back there this summer, I will see about getting the motor, But maybe one of you guys will get it. It ok by me. That is why I'm telling you about it.

351M is a sought after motor....... cool I got one for sale. I probably would trade it for a fuzzy peach or whatever. It was running 4 years ago.

I've also haven't thought the 351M to be a sought after engine. Most people would just opt for the 400 as its the same weight but more power. The 400 being a "square" engine will nearly have equal hp and torque.

The biggest problem with the 351M/400 engines is the near lack of aftermarket support. Edelbrock is the only one that makes an intake but it is a dual plane and nearly a replica of the factory one. They are also a big engine, the block has nearly the same dimensions as a 460. The pistons are also rather heavy making for a slower reving engine. The compression height of a 351M is 1.947" compared to the 400 1.647". Just for comparison a typical 302 stroker piston is about 1.1".

The best thing about them is their canted valve heads. For being a stock head they flow pretty darn decent. With them being open chamber makes building good compression hard.

So if you wanted to be really different you could toss in an aftermarket 4" crank, 460 6.7" stroker rods, custom pistons, custom camshaft, AFD/CHI Cleveland heads, single plain Cleveland intake with adapter plates. The sucker would move but the wallet would be pretty light though.

Depends on how you look at it Chad. I have a real boat anchor in my T-Rod, a 327 cheby and I`d much prefer the 351/400.

No I Don't Need the motor, I was just thinking of selling it, flipping it. , I have had guys ask me IF MY CARS i HAVE FOR SALE IF THEY HAVE a modified engine.
A old friend had one in his truck and pulled it out. It sold licky split. I thought lots of guys wanted them and now I hear boat anchor. I will admit that I don't know much about which motors are performance or not. I'm a body person.

I dunno either, nor do I really care. But if you do come across another poteintial buyer be sure to pass him along. I got no use for the motor. (it may be only good as a core since sitting outside though)
