Unhappy Transmission problems

First i would like to say Edge sucks, and im taking it off first thing tomorrow morning. Sorry for the rude intro but it seems as if my edge programmer has been giving me nothing but problems. transmission slipping when shifting on level 5 was the first sign of transmission problems so i just decided to run it on level 2 all the time (tow mode).

Well every thing has been fine for the past month until today i was crusing arond 50mph when the car in front of me took a right. i had to slow down almost to a complete stop and then i acclerated.

Now it wasnt a WOT accel but it wasn't slow, it was just a good beefy listen to that good sounding 7.3 accleration. well it shifted into 2 but when it shifted into 3 it freakin slipped like crazy, like im talkin 350,000 miles orginal trans fluid kind of slip. yea and the trucks only got 68,000 on it so im like wtf i pulled over to check the trans fluid, checked out good but wasn't as pink as it was a week ago and had a slight burn smell to it. so now im freaking pissed, get back into the truck and i notice the overdrive light is flashing. drove off and it slipped again. pulled over shut truck off. started back up and now the over drive light is off and seems to be shifting better but still kinda weird.

soo what do yal think? is my trans toast? sorry for the long post but i wanted to be discriptive. Thanks

ya it might be. sounds kinda like what mine did right before i lost 1st and 2nd gear. i could be wrong but thats what mine did......

I would call around to some junk yards and see if anyone has a tranny. Sometimes you can find ones out of junk trucks for not to bad a price that still run decent. I knew mine was going out so thats what i did, bought it with the old torque converter for 700 bucks. then when my trans crapped out i put in the "loner" and it got me by until i had the time and money to rebuild my original. Keep in mind though there is no guarantee that the junk yard one will run, so if you have enough time i would suggest rebuilding that one.

Before changing the trans you need to find out what code was stored when the OD light flashed. It could be something minor, and it could even be something that won't get fixed with a new trans.

You need to find someone with a Ford compatible scan tool. The generic ones that the auto parts stores use will tell you there are no codes. There is a code stored.

01 trannys are a known problem. That sucks with only 68k miles on it though. That's why i'm wary of chipping mine. It's got 85k on it and the tranny needs to last until about 150k when the truck will be payed for.

like Brandon said the 01's have some mechanical diode that goes out in the tranny. May want to do some searching on that and get your codes read.

I don't know -- slipping trans & burnt smelling fluid doesn't sound very good to me. I think you're on borrowed time now. Like Mark said, get the codes read and hope for the best. I'd start saving up if I were you.

Sounds like you do a little issue. Go with what the others said and get it scannned from ford. I think its like 71 bucks. I do agree with you on edge. Not to be rude cause i have started a argument about calling edge junk but i really dislike them. I would get that junk off and get a chip from jody. His are the best i every way. I was just thinking and when we built our our drag truck in school the edge did cause the trans to have alot of issues. So many that we replaced it with a C6 with manual valve body. Then we also ended up having someone reburn our chip too since edges' customer service is one big freaking joke

I would have to agree with you about the EDGE chip, and the others about getting your codes. Ever since I installed EDGE on my truck my transmission has always shifted funny. I am not impressed with their chip when it comes to the tranny shift points, seems like they dont shift when they should on low end, and then turn around and shift way to soon on top end.

Thanks.

If you do the buildup ATS sells their heavy duty rebuild kit for 650 and ATS is the leader in trans. Not sure if it comes with steel planetares but since you have 35 swampers i would get them. If not included $100 is a small price to pay for maximum durability. My other truck which i a 96 has them with 36s and its doing very good so far
