Cmp ?
I bought a used 2002 F350 7.3 turbo diesel last September (2008); it had 184,000 miles and currently has 191,000 miles.
I had the CMP sensor changed under the Ford recall (October 2008). It ran great for about a month. Then one day I drove it into town (20 miles) and I shut it off while I went into a store. Came back ten minutes later and it wouldn't start; I cycled the key a few times and tried starting and nothing; ten minutes later it started.
No problems for two weeks then it does the same thing; after that incident the truck ran great all winter (temperatures down to -40 celcius).
Fast forward to last Saturday (June 27, 2009). I drove 20 miles and the truck stalls like someone turned the kay off............10 minutes later it starts and I get home which was only 3 minutes away. Later that day I drove 10 miles and it stalls on the highway................15 minutes later it starts and then stalls 5 minutes down the highway.................another 30 minutes later it starts again and I'm able to get to my buddies (10 miles away) wedding which I was an hour late for.
The next day I drove home from the wedding (20 miles away) without any problems............it idles and runs nice.
The day after this I drive 50 miles to work without any problems. Coming home 2 days later I stall in the first 3 miles.................20 minutes later it starts and I make it home (47 miles).
I was able to get a friends scanner on it and pulled the following codes:
P1209, P1211, P0603, P0340
I disconnected my batteries two weeks ago to clean the terminals and I'm assuming that is why I got the "P0603" code ?
I am also guessing that the CMP sensor could be faulty even though Ford replaced this less 8000 miles ago ?
I'm also wondering if a faulty CMP sensor would cause the other codes to be triggered ie; P1209, and P1211 ??
This truck is the only transportation I have (and I am a diesel newbie) so any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
I am going to get a new CMP sensor in the next few days and try that. It also seems to me, from reading through old posts, that I have the symtoms of a failing IPR or ICP ??
Thanks again in advance for any other ideas you might have.
Do any dash lights act funny when the truck cuts out? Changing the sensor will only cost you about $25 if you do it yourself, and it's a good idea to have a spare anyway. If that's not it, it's time to start checking a few known wiring issues.
Sounds like another CPS issue, or maybe some chafed wires? Not sure, so here's a bump. Stick around. The folks here will get you up and running in no time. This forum has some great folks here. Post your location and I'll bet you can an FTE member to help you out in person. That's the kind of people we have here. That's why I became a supporter.
Sorry if my responses are slow. I live in North-western Ontario, Canada. I live 30 minutes from the neareset store and I'm on dial-up internet

The Ford dealership (which is 2 hours away) has the CMP (F7TZ-12K073-B). I won't be able to get it until tomorrow because I have an independant courier bringing it to me. I will install it and see what happens; and I will keep you guys posted for sure.
I don't have any chip or programmer that I know of; but I will check today if there is a chip. I do understand that this can throw a P0603 code...........so can disconnecting the battery which I did do two weeks ago.
What bothers me is that most people who experience CMP problems can usually start their truck right away after it stalls............at least from what I've read. My truck seems to need a little cooling before it restarts.
I guess I'm just going to have install the new CMP and see what happens. I will also try and see if I can notice any chaffed wires.
No, I don't notice anything strange with the dash lights when the truck stalls. I did notice the engine-check light came on, once, when I stalled and was coasting.
Thanks again for the responses and encouragement and I'll keep you guys posted.
When I had problems with my CPS, the truck would quit like turning the key off. I would let it set for a few mins, then it would crank back up and run for a while then die again. Finally it would not start. Went to Ford and bought a new one for $189.00, put it in and it started right up. No more problems after that. I now have 2 CPS in my glove box.

Sorry for the long delay in responding.
I just wanted to update you guys in case someone has similar issues. I replaced the CMP and I've put on 200 miles without a problem so far (although, I'm keeping my fingers crossed lol); I'll definateley be carrying around an extra CMP in the future.
When I replaced the CMP I did notice a droplet of water coming out of the wiring harness when I disconnected it; actually, the day I experienced the first real stall, it happened to be raining.................not sure if there is a connection or not. However, I decided to put a little "dielectric" silicone on the new CMP electrical contacts.........before connecting.
After I installed the CMP, I later read that "Dieselman" suggests using dielectric silicone on the CMP's rubber gasket as well.
I also decided to change the fuel filter (I don't think this had anything to do with my problems.........but I didn't think it would hurt to change it); it only had around 7000 miles on it because it was replaced by a mechanic before I bought it. I didn't realize the fuel filter was the kind that came with the lid attached (because I didn't know there was such a thing at the time); it was a Napa filter and I had a Motorcraft filter. So, I had to get a new lid. The Ford dealership didn't have any in stock and it would have taken them some time to order one............so I was able to get a Napa lid (BK 7305604) which seems to fit well.
Thanks again everyone for their response and encouragement.
