I have a 72 F100 with a C6. I was wondering if anyone has put an overdrive unit on and if it was worth it for the extra gas mileage. If anyone has what kind was it and how much work did it take.
Bob, there has been a lot of dialogue on this subject the past couple of months. Do a search on this site using terms like overdrive, gear vendor, etc.... You'll have plenty to read.
I think it is generally accepted that 460's w/C6 having rear gears of 3.55 to 4.10's get pretty much the same mileage - lousy.
I don't know what your driving habits are, nor how much driving you do with your truck, but I decided that the small mpg improvement that I could "possibly" realize didn't warrant the the additional cost of an overdrive unit.

The quick answer is NO. If you want to see for yourself, go to a junk yard and buy a ford 9" with tall gears and swap it in and see what happens. You'll find that if you got 10mpg you may get 12mpg now.
A gear change will do the same thing, but you'll loose some of the low end power. For most trucks that don't tow a lot, the best option is new gears or taller tires because the $3000 for an overdrive takes a LONG time to pay off. If you have a 2speed transfer case, I'd try tall gears and then use the lower range for towing if needed.
If you can find one used, it might be another story. I've seen used OD units for about 600~800.
where have u seen the used units for that price, i was thinking about putting in the o/d unit into my truck but i am not sure it will fit, i have dual gass tanks and it looks pretty tight down there, but maybe the unit will fit in there better...
