Hey all, I have a 1979 Ford F100 w/302 I'm going to start restoring. The C-6 auto trans in it is a 3 speed. I would like to put a another transmission that has overdrive on it for the highway gear. As of now it whines pretty good at 75 mph and I hate to drive a long distance on that rpm for the motor and the gas. Does anyone know what is involved in putting an overdrive trans in? Like is it a module or just as simple as adding an O/D button? 1979 did not come with OD. I should add that there is a 9" rear with 325's in it and the speed odometer reads 65 mph when my GPS reads 55mph. I do like the power off the line but that extra gear in the trans would be nice. Your thoughts!!
AOD from '88-'93 will work. Can be beefed a bit, but these model years are the ones where the factory actually fixed some of the many flaws in this trans. Get one from a V8 or truck 6 or V8.
The cost to swap in an OD will vary, depending on where you get the trans and if you get lucky in getting one. TCI has dimension info for trans, so you can measure yours and compare, see if you need DS or cross member work. The AOD requires a TV cable or linkage (or it burns up) so that and the shifter need to be changed/added/adapted.
For around $3000, you keep your C6 (not a C4 is it?) and bolt a Gear Vendors OD to the tail, and now you have a 6 speed.
From a bolt on tail I can get 3 extra gears added for a total of 6 gears? I'll take a look at the links. For 3k that would be worth it. I'm going to be completely restoring the truck once I get all the part together. The LMC catalog is a great source for parts. I think I could use something from every page..lol.
you also have the option of a 5 speed manual tranny if you want to go that route.
M5od which is an ok manual or the stronger zf 5 speed. the zf has a granny low first which is very nice and of course has the od gear for the hwy. u didnt mention if your truck is 2wd or 4wd so be sure that the tranny you grab is specific to that to help with the install.
It is a 2 wheel drive. I'm very impressed with the Gear Vendors products. I had to read it through carefully to get the full understanding and even still some eludes me, but I get the meaning of what it does. Not cheep at $2600. but would probably pay itself off at some time. It seams like an easier way to got if I can put the cash together. Thank for all the help guys. I'll keep you updated and get a pic up when I get started.

Just saw this. If you're interested in more on the GV OD unit, check out Hot Rod Magazine, they're used it on a number of project vehicles in recent years. I think the last one was just a few months ago - a low buck high HP pickup. Seems to hold together well. I'm thinking of the same thing once I get my truck paid off.
