I have a 1998 f 150 v8 4.6 ltr xlt. A mechanic told me that if my tranny gets hot the OVERDRIVE LIGHT will start to blink. It sounds strange to me, does anyone know if this is correct, or, should I have a guage installed? I will be towing a trailer this summer. Thank you in advance . Bob
Yes the trans has a temp sensor.
It does two things. Locks out OD until the fluid temp get to about 98 degrees and is monitored for over temp by the computer.
However you don't really want to wait for that extreme.
There are three locations to consider a gage location.
A. The pan.
B. The side of the transmission case.
C. The output line from the converter to the radiator cooler.
Locaton A and B has a disadvantage of too high too late for temp readings.
Location C will show you the highest temps on a fast changing basis.
This location show the high temps from converter fluid shear before it goes to the radiator cooler.
The temps are always there so the first timer gets concerned about how high it goes but is normal. You can't do anything about it anyways.
Pulling a load with converter unlocked can run the temps up depending on load, grade and outside temps to as high as 260 degrees but cools fast as the loading reduces. You just see it in near real time for changes.
Normally the running temps in OD at steady throttle and time to equalize should be under 150 degrees.
Be awhere the Mercon V fluid will take temps as high as 280 + before serious degradation begins to tke place.
An extra aux cooling between the radiator and the trans would alway be good insurance.
More than you ask but doesn't hurt to know more.
Good luck.
Thank you BLUEGRASS 7. I do have an aux. cooler by the radiator for the trans. but, I am going to have an actual guage installed where suggested in position "C" Thanks again. Bob
I would highly suggest a Scangauge2 or something similar. I have been using one on all my SD's and now on my 97 F250. I have programmed in Engine Oil, Coolant, and Tranny for monitoring all the time.
TrdLtly - I have a Scanguage 2 in my 99 that was originally in my super duty as well. Mine doesn't show a value for the tranny temp. Would you mind sharing what if anything you did to make it read that value? Thanks

Hey Todd, See if this helps. If yours won't read it then you may need to update your firmware, which consists of sending the unit back to Linear Logic to update.
