Before drainig the fluid make sure you can get the fill nut loose. If not you will end up with all the fluid drained and no way to fill it back up without having to go get a bigger ratchet and a cheater bar from friend. Don't ask me how I learned this lesson.

XL-12 from Ford is what I use. The reason is becuase for some reason Ford freaked out about the Mercon and Mercon V specifications for their transfer cases and doesn't want us using Mercon V for what ever reason, but nearly all new Mercon ATFs out there are Mercon V. I do think Mobil 1 synthetic universal ATF is specified for both, but just to be safe I've always used XL-12.
How often should this be done? Ive got 109K miles and I bought the truck with 89K and never put any thought toward it. Im a fan of amsoil anyone have any opinions on using it in the TC?

IIRC they recommend a 150k interval but I am not sure off the top of my head. My father's truck has 242k miles and I know he has NEVER changed his on this truck or any other truck he has owned. I am not saying it is the best idea but it still works. I have Wally World Dex/Merc in mine, doesn't have the slightly more aggressive friction modifiers as Merc V. I plow so I change mine out annually, definitely overkill but it is only about 2 quarts of fluid so I am not breaking the bank to do this.
AAP and NAPA have simple one gallon bottle pumps that make changing x-cases and diffs sooooo much easier. You waste far less fluid.
