OT: Is your windows computer being a POS ??
It runs like crap off the CD, but it gives you a pretty fair idea what it would be like to install it.
If you took a look at the benchmarks, my point was that theres no point in waiting for windows 7. Ubuntu is probably the best "1st" linux distro. Other linux versions may be better at certain things, but nothing comes close to satisfying the average user.
My 1.6ghz 2gb machine with ubuntu is used on a daily basis on the internet, and is still faster than my dual core 3ghz windows xp media computer in the living room which is used only to play games and movies.
Now with vista service pack 2, I see a lot of people ditching their 2-3 year old machines because it sucks. -EmpireTC, you seen a bunch of computers crashing from service pack updates lately? For a lot of people, it was the last straw, especially those who bought 400$ wal mart computers.
The $400 machine is a big problem. MS commented on this last year. Those machines are bottom of the barrel quality wise and people want to do EVERYTHING with them. You can't expect much from them.
It's like someone in an S10 thinking he has a Stroker.
Anyways, the machines you administer are lucky enough to be cared for by a knowledgable person, the average home PC, they won't take it to the shop until it literally will not turn on anymore, because it is so currupt. I work on about 1-3 vista computers a day, stuck in a boot loop after an update to SP2, and cannot restore to an earlier time, its crazy hard to get 'em running nice again.
Most are Hp and dell, of course with expired AV, of course....
Then, it should have the top option highlighted "Try ubuntu without making changes to your computer"
or something like that.
It will run slow off the CD, but you'll get a half azzed test drive anyways.
system>administration>hardware drivers
Install extra software :
Applications>Add / remove
( get "Gstreamer ffmpeg" and "Gstreamer extra plugins" so that mp3, divx, etc all work)
If you have DSL, you need to go to Applications>accessories>Terminal. Terminal is almost sorta like DOS. Anyways, type "pppoeconf" and it will start the DSL connection program, and you can make it start automatically so you never have to go back in there.
Other than that, play around, download the plugins for firefox,
There is 2 ways to run windows software in ubuntu. Neither fully support 3d apps yet.
1. Download / install "wine" , it runs some windows programs in ubuntu.(I have GTA3 running fine in ubuntu)
2. Download /install "Sun VirtualBox" Not for the faint at heart, but really cool. Its a computer emulator if you will, and you can install any operating system you wish, and it can run windowsed on your desktop! --NO 3d support quite yet....
I always reccomend a computer storing vital business software be firewalled and no internet access.
In a perfect world, that would be ridiculous, however, in the real world, owners kids come and play on it, download some free wallpapers, and pretty soon the things infected.
Just buy a 400$ computer from wal mart, exclusively for surfing, and keep your business machine safe. I don't care what kind of antivirus or security crap it has, it can still get infected.

My experience with Mandrake was pretty good too, I have a mail server at my office that has been running it since about 2003.
I ran OpenSuse on my laptop for a couple of years and really liked it, then I ran Ubuntu Intrepid on it for a couple of years and it was very stable as well.
Right now I have the Win7 RC on it, and it does ok, but it works the system much, much harder. I still have the Ubuntu installation on another hard drive and will soon be going back to that.
Here's the biggest problem with me running Ubuntu on my main machine: Outlook and Itunes just absolutely will not work with wine, and this machine I have at the moment
just isnt fast enough to do any virtualization.
I totally agree with you, if you don't have any specific apps that you need to run, give Ubuntu a shot. There is a free open-source clone to just about every application out there.
btw parkland, have you tried out FreeNX?
Its very fast, much much faster than vnc.. check it outhttp://www.nomachine.com/
The other Office apps will work, but Outlook still doesn't. Their commercial alternative to Wine: Crossover will run it. Makes you wonder if it is left out of support for Wine intentionally.
But paying for software for linux defeats the purpose, so I've never tried the Crossover software.
If you could pay 50$, and be guaranteed to be able to run windows software, that would be 50$ for the best OS ever.
The only problem with wine, is that it doesnt work. I mean, it does, but if it worked flawlessly, there would be no reason to pay hundreds of dollars to put up with MS windows OS...
