I have a recently acquired 1996 F150 4.9 L / 5 speed . I've been having overheating issues and had to replace the thermostat housing , and the thermostat recently . I'm not sure I put the heater hoses back on correctly ? If you stand in front of the truck , hood open and look at the heater hoses as they come out of the firewall , which hose ( the one on the left or the one on the right ) goes to the thermostat housing ? I'm not sure it would make a difference but would like to know it's correct ! Help this old newbie , please !
Thanks for your response ! My truck is a 1996 F150 with the inline 4.9 L (6 cylinder ) and the picture seems to be a V6 or V8 . My setup does not look anything like the pictures .
just put a thermostat in my truck yesterday 95 4.9 5sp. the hose on the left when viewing from the front (fender side hose ) goes to the thermostat housing mine had a original ford stat in it and the antifreeze looked like creek mud running out had to flush forever to get clear water to run out
Thanks , subford ! I do see the new image . The old image definitely was different . The new image shows the hose from the thermostat housing going to the right hose connection on the firewall . 4x4 stepside said his had the thermostat housing hose going to the left side connection ? Does it really make a difference ? If you hook it up backward , the flow through the heater core would go in a reverse direction , would that hurt anything ? Most newer vehicles have a valve that shuts off water flow to the heater core when the a/c system is activated . I don't see any evidence of that valve on my pickup ( unless it's in the cab under the dash ) ? So if it doesn't have this valve , would the direction of flow through the heater core matter ? This is all new to me guys and just want to get it right . I truly appreciate your help

Some say it does but I think on yours the tanks are on each side and not top and bottom so I would not think so.
The new image is from the 1996 shop manual.

As I said above I do not see how it would.

The valve is mostly on Vans and SUVs with large passenger compartments where they need the extra cooling. No you would not have it under the dash. The direction of flow through the valve would not make any difference, it would block it either way. The vacuum for the valve is “T”ed into the Panel vacuum motors vacuum hose. So it turns off the water to the heater any time the Panel vents are blowing air.
