The cab is fine, the engine block would be better, but running a negative lead all the way to the battery is overkill and probably worse than having that tiny 24g wire just go straight to the firewall.
In the instruction manual for that specific tach, SunPro notes that erratic operation may result if the tach is not grounded directly to the negative post of the battery... For some reason i would ground it to the battery, since it is acting erratic, and SunPro themselves said that can happen if not grounded directly to the battery.
Nothing is overkill if it gets the tach to work properly, especially when its just a few feet of wire.
My tachs are grounded to sheet metal in the cab, but they work fine. The only things i have grounded to my battery in my truck are my MSD box and my aux. cooling fan.
I went ahead and grounded directly to the battery, just to be sure. It is still hanging up. I have been looking at converting the points to a petronix electronic ingnition and getting a msd blaster coil, so I guess now would be the time.
