On my '60 Merc I put the tach in the instrument panel, since a PO had already chewed a hole in it near one of the embossed stars. If you don't want to cut or drill anything, clamp it to the steering column.
I put mine in a gauge cup and mounted it on top of my dash. I would bet I am the only one here willing to drill a hole in their dash... I like them up high where I can see them
Looks like all of the possibilities have been coveredn dash, in-dash or column. My PO, as daring as 53fatfndr, had a tach mounted on the dash under the mirror. The holes are filled and the dash restored to sage green smoothness. As a boy I had the Sun mounted there on my '55 Chevy. It was there for racing and, as noted, easy to see.
Poking a hole in the face of the dash to insert a non-matched instrument doesn't seem to have any happy aspects.
Most Americans would mount the tach on the column and I intend to follow this route as I feel it will look spiffy near my boss engine turned instrument panel. Real hot rod stuff, if you know what I mean. Don't want the stocker boys thinking I've lost my commitment.
I had contemplated mounting it on my column, but if you look at my column, it wasn't possible. I can't drop the column as I'm too tall and my legs barely fit as it is. Believe me, I contemplated where to put it, but on top of the dash was the best route for me.
I made a custom dash panel and bezel for 53 F-250. I can make more it is made out of 1/8" aluminum panel. Check them out on my site. www.freewebs.com/robs53
I am using VDO gages in a custom 6 hole gage panel so all the gages will match and fit in the original space without any cutting. The panel is made for the 3 1/8 inch speedo and tach plus the 4 normal gages for fuel, battery, temp and oil. The gage panel is from Hot Rods trucks and mounts the speedo and tach beside each other in the middle of the panel with 2 small gages on each side. I need to get a pic in my gallery.
I mounted mine on the left side of my column with a hose clamp. I may move it one day. It's not bad driving down the highway, just kind of hard to see going down the track.
My suggestion is not on top of the dash, Mine was mounted there by PO and I hate it. I took it of and they butchered the dash up, so I am going to make a cup out of a Chrome dummy spot light and mount it flush on the dash.
This is my tach location but I think I will switch it with the speedo so I can read the speedometer. It seems with these small steering wheels and me not being the tallest of the bunch the speedometer gets blocked from my view.
I drove it about 80 miles today and most of the time I had no clue how fast I was going but after a 4 yr wait it was sure was fun.
