I have a '04 F-350 6.0. On acceleration at times it will "chuff" and lose power - did it a lot today when pulling a load but will do it at odd times with no load. Also smokes.
could be a sticky egr valve, its in the front of the intake manifold next to where the air tube comes from the intercooler. pulll it out and clean it, check for free movement, when they're real bad you may have to pull intake manifold and steam it out
Bill, are you still under warranty? How many miles?
Mine did this, problem solved when they replaced the turbo guts (center hub rotating assembly), the vanes were rusty and sticking. Cleaning the EGR won't hurt, but consider turbo vanes also.
Good luck, it took the techs here about 18,000 miles to figure mine out, dumb me.
Don't wait that long next time on the fuel filters. You are flirting w/ injector repair bills. 10k filter change intervals is a good thing to get in the habit of. Also - many good threads in the Tech folder that can help you avoid problems in the future.
ive been experiencing the same thing this site seems to point towards sticking vanes so i pulled my turbo and it was stuck. see my thread "Hello chaps turbo off" in this section.
Just a bit to let all know that I got the turbo off and cleaned up - it was stuck - actually it was the "unison ring" that was frozen by its inner perimeter.
The two front bolts came out fairly easy but the one at the back was a real "bugger" - naturally! Mine is in horizontal, like the others. Finally got it by taking the downpipe loose from the cat and that allowed it to move up enough to get a longer ratchet on the bolt.
Getting it out was no problem with all the advice. I would recommend a top creeper to do all this work!
It cleaned up well and went back in about as easy as coming out - except for the last quarter-inch, but that finally made it and the turbo slipped right in.
I didn't tighten one connection on the compressor outlet quite good enough so it blew off on the first test run.
