It's not been going anywhere recently. I've been extraordinarily busy as of late. Too many projects around here with 2 cafe racers to work on also. That, and the fact that the truck is a daily driver means that I don't always get to work on it when I'd like. Hopefully I can get working on it again soon.
Are all dashes interchangeable? Say I pulled the gauge bezel out of a 77', would it work for mocking up how I would do it in my '78? I'm probably getting a speedo, tach, fuel, oil and volt gauges. And a Nitrous gauge if I run it once I get my intake and carb...
Yes, everything is the same usually, that is, as long as you're comparing non-AC to non-AC or AC to AC. There is a difference between the AC equipped and non-AC trucks. The circuitry on different year gauge clusters changes too, but the cluster itself is the same size and shape always.
I have sort of a dumb question, does the original speedo cable attach to the speedometer some how? Also how do you plan on wiring all the gauges up? This is a cool project.
The new speedo is electronic, so in place of the cable plugged into the transfer case will be a Hall-effect sensor that translates the rotation into an electronic signal and that is wired to the speedo. Wiring the rest of the gauges is simple. I just use a wiring diagram to understand and splice into the wires from the original cluster's harness. At a later date I plan on replacing all the factory electrical with a Ron Francis harness, so I'll have to re-wire them at that point, but for now it's a simple splice job.
I'm getting to the point where I start working on mine again soon. Is the cad file for the surround (overall size) good? If so I might see if I can grab it from you to send to my plasma cutting guy.
It's been about 2 months since I mentioned getting back to work on my dash and I started messing with it again tonight. It's hard figuring out where I left off since it's been almost a year since I last messed with it
I figured I'd check if you have done anything since your last post.
Sorry. Been busy around here and haven't touched it in months. My last mockup just sits there and stares at me with the gauges in place, looking good. Sure wish I had the time right now...
Don't feel bad. I haven't touched my dash in months either. I got all the gauges done, and I was about to install, then I bought another truck, spent weeks parting it out, bought another truck, started parting it out, I'm gearing up for an EFI swap, I need to build new electronic gauges. I'm also moving up to a tilt column with power steering... Pretty much all my old plans are getting upgraded or changed. I've now got more parts than I know what to do with.
No update due to no time. In two weeks I'll be presenting my thesis for my Master's of Architecture degree. As soon as that's done with I might be able to find a few free seconds for the dash... BTW, Have you made any progress on yours, ChaseTruck754?
