my truck just started having these symptoms today. while driving home from work my 2001 f-250 started acting like it was about to quit (the engine would cut out very sporadically). when slowing down at a red light the truck would die if i didn't put it in neutral and keep it revved up. I stopped and checked the oil and it was low so i added about 2 quarts. when cranking the truck back up it would take a while and i would have to keep pressing the throttle to get it going and keep it revved up to keep it going. Also, the check engine light came on when it was doing this. When i was cranking the truck back up white smoke would come out of the exhaust. I thought i might have air in the fuel lines to i stopped and filled up with fuel and this was not the problem. I am afraid i have messed up the engine running it to low on oil. Is this a possibility? Any suggestions on what i might try too fix this issue?
You didn't hurt anything with low oil. Cool thing about our engines, they will stop running before you hurt anything. If you ran it low and the HPOP was starved for oil, it will take a while to get every thing running good again. It is possible you may have damaged the IPR. The smoke was unburned fuel and nothing to worry about now. Fill your oil, or change it, run for a while and see if it clears up.
im one step ahead of you. i just changed the oil and cranked it. still running the same so far. what is the IPR and how will i know if this is the problem? thanks for the help zx.
Not much way to check for sure. You can have your codes read and that will help. You can also try unplugging the ICP when it's running rough and see if it smooths out. I think a little time may be all you need.
i tried running it for a while and it did not smooth out. the truck is at olive garden now and i tried keeping it running for about 15 minutes with starter fluid and it still would not stay running. i unplugged the icp while it was running (with aid of starter fluid) and it did not smooth out. Anything else i can try. i hate to have to call a tow truck to come get it.
Make sure you still have oil. Don't use that much starter fluid, very hard on engine and not safe. You have to make sure you are getting fuel. You can open the drain valve on the back of the bowl and turn key on. It should produce a good stream of fuel and it will make a mess on the ground if you don't catch it. Next, you can check the little tin nut on the back of the IPR and make sure it hasn't fallen off or got loose.
Are you cranking then shutting off or just never cranking?
if i give it a lot of throttle it will crank eventually (most of the time). i know i shouldnt use starter fluid but i could not get it to run without it. i will check the oil again. you dont happen to have a diagram of where the drain valve is on the back of the bowl do you? im not sure where this is. i will check that nut on the ipr and see if its ok.
Sounds exactly like mine did when my IPR failed. Check that nut and make sure it's tight. You can see the valve on the picture above. It is on the back side of the bowl, yellow lever, tubed down the side of the engine and over the axle. Where are you located?
the engine is getting fuel. when i turned that yellow valve fuel shot out the bottom of the truck. i also checked the nut on the ipr and it appeared to be fine (if im looking at the right thing). i tried cranking the truck again to no avail. any more suggestions?
Without checking for codes, it's purely guess work. I really feel that by running low on oil the IPR has trash in it or is damaged. It's not a cheap part to guess at. Most dealers will have them in stock, but will be expensive. Other than that, I'm lost. Might be time to try to get it home or somewhere to work on it.
