i used to use rotella now i use delo. i wont let them work on it probably unless its something major. they will probably tell me it needs a new engine. im thinking about trading this one and trying to get a newer f-250 with some warranty left. it has about 188,000 miles on it and all of these breakdowns are killing me.
188,000 is not that much and atleast with the truck you have now, we can help you with it. The newer ones have issues to, but harder and more expensive to fix. Hang in there, we'll get if fixed.
I'll bet they tell you your HPOP is bad and needs replacing. Seen it several times around here. Post back with the codes before you let them do anything.
the ford place called friday and said my starter was burned out, so i went and took it off, went to autozone and got a new one (luckily under warranty). I went and changed it out saturday and just hear from them today on what the main problem was. looks like it had to do with my programmer. i have an Edge Juice with attitude. Here is the official report.
It was causing an intermittent open signal in the crankshaft position sensor. He unplugged the programmer, cleared the codes and plugged it back in. It seems to be running fine now. Truthfully, I didn't even think about the programmer affecting it.
well i drove my truck about 6 hours over the weekend and when i got back into town it started doing the same thing again. I unplugged everything that had to do with the edge programmer and plugged in all the stock hookups. still not working. this time it has not tripped the check engine light. anything i can try before i take it back to the Ford place?
Have you replaced the Cam Positon Sensor yet? Can't imagine how the Edge would have fooled with the signal. I really doubt it did. My guess is they got a CPS code and jumped to that conclusion.
I'm not an expert on the edge, but I'll throw out what I think I know.
First, the edge can read codes, so look through the manual and see how to pull the codes from your truck (if the edge unit isn't screwed up somehow)
Second, the edge is a programmer. You press a bunch of buttons and it copies the data from your PCM into the little box and over writes the PCM with a new program. Simply unplugging the edge box will not set the truck back to stock, it just unplugs the gauge feature. You need to go through the menu system and program the truck back to stock.
Third, if the edge is having difficulties reading rpm signal, then there's either a problem with the truck wiring, the plug / wires off the edge, or the unit itself is going out. RPM signal is read through the PCM, which leads to the last point.
If you've got a corrupted file on the PCM, there are numerous possibilities of how the truck may act, including not properly reading the CPS signal.
Make sure the truck is set to the stock program and see if the problem persists. If so, find out how to pull the codes with the edge so we can go from there.
Barry's advice here so far has been good, but since you forgot to mention the edge, everything he's mentioned is either controlled by or read by the PCM. You need to make sure the edge isn't interfering with the PCM operation.
