I have an 84 F150 with a 302. As long as I have been around Ford products I have been aware of the disposable fender mounted solenoid that does the treaded click..click..click when it has gone out. When I bought my pickup it even came with a new solenoid as the previous owner had replaced it 7 times since 1984. I got in the truck this past weekend to bump the key as usual to start. The fun began.
The starter would not stop engaging even with the ignition switch off and the keys on the floorboard. I took off to yank the battery cables to keep from having a harness fire and popped the hood. No tools so I yanked the positive cable and noticed the lug going into the solenoid was loose...the whole lug not the tightening nut. Yanked on it enough to break the circuit and stop the starter...anyone ever have this issue?
At least some Chinese-made solenoids are known to be poorly made these days.
Starter motors are intended to operate for only short amounts of time, they're not supposed
to be run for more than 30-45 secs (I forget which but it's in the Owner's Manual) ) before
being allowed to cool for a few minutes else they could be damaged.
This is a big problem with the cheap solenoids they are making now. Keep trying different brands.
Never heard of the "click click click" syndrome being a starter solenoid(relay) problem. That's usually a poor battery or a loose or corroded connection at the battery or battery cable.
This was a NAPA unit...as were the previous failures. Another replacement NAPA was $10.49. Should last me on the farm until either the truck or myself go to the bone orchard.
I have had this happen to me on my 86 150. But it was only when i had it in gear with the cluch in. So all i could think of was to get the motor on, so i rode the key till it ran. When I went to start it later it did the "CLick" Poped the hood and the pos post on the selinoid melted out. THe neg cable from the starter jumps 2 inches in the air then smokes. I havent replaces cables yet, hopfully tomorrow. How did you turned out.
I had that happen to me before.I sat there for a couple seconds wondering how in the world the truck was doing it.Finally I jumped out and yanked the negative cable, and it stopped.Later found out that the cheap solenoid I had just bought to replace the 30 year old original Motorcraft had apparently froze.I went into my shop, grabbed the old Motorcraft, threw it on,and haven't had a problem with it since.
