I have been having a problem starting my truck. When I start the truck the starter will not cut out. I turn the key back to off but the starter continues to crank until I put the truck into gear and let out the clutch to stall it. Then, when I try to restart, the starter only clicks. This happens really randomly, hot, cold, after being ran for 100 miles, or 2 minutes, may happen twice in a day, or a week apart. The truck is a 1986 F-250 300 I6 NP-435
I have replaced
Ignition lock cylinder
Ignition switch
starter
starter solenoid
cables from
solenoid to starter
battery to starter
battery to solenoid
replaced the alternator about 4 years ago
and the battery about 2 years ago
Replaced all of these things and haven't had a problem in about a week but I drove the truck about 40 miles yesterday stopped to get gas and could only get it to click for about 15 minutes then it started....It may be possessed
I also noticed that the ignition switch holes are oblong so I pushed the switch away from the ignition cylinder...maybe that was keeping the ignition rod from fully closing the switch?
The starter solenoid grounds directly to the fender by it's attachment, and if it's not got a proper ground, then it can cause some problems, such as sticking. China made starter solenoids are prone to be bad out of the box, and is a crap shoot to get a good one.
When you replaced the ground cable from the battery to the starter, you may have inadvertently done away with your frame ground. On the original factory cable, about half way along it, there is a ground tang along the middle of the cable where it bolts to the frame. Aftermarket cables do not have this, so it needs to be improvised.
How old is the starter? Sounds like it's getting hot from the motor and after it cools it works again. Old or defective starters are prone for this type of malfunction.
Ok, I made a few changes and I think I have found some things that may have contributed to the starter sticking and not turning over at all...the ignition switch was in the close up position, so I pushed it towards the firewall now when I turn the key I can feel the switch click into each position, also I returned the starter for a new one.....when I unbolted the starter I noticed that the quality of the casting was really bad so I think that this may be where the binding may be coming from? I hope this helped at least we will see
