I skimmed through a good part of this thread before I thought I would give my own imput.
I took the advice of the retired John Deere mechanic who perfectly timed my truck and added some Dextron 3 ATF to my tanks. About half a quart in each tank.
How did it do? Well, I had been using Diesel Kleen for a few years...but the ATF blew it out of the water with a 6 mpg average gain. That figure is measured over 8 fills. Mileage was down to about 14 mpg when I changed filters...started using ATF in my fuel and am sitting in the low 20's now.
Just my experience with the stuff is all. As far as worries about it turning a hit for the off road diesel, I was advised to keep the empty bottle with me. Apparently if they tested against the type of ATF you were running, you would be clean.

damn that is retarded. so ATF is better than regular additives? hmmm. Now how about running the B5 bio? Is that going to produce better mileage too or should you add the ATF anyway?
Also how is the best way to "time" the engine correctly. I know there are two different ways and one is better but is there a place to just take it and let them do it right?

As for the one gallon guy, Don't know what court costs are in Canada, but there they are high enough that the fuel was probably cheaper, and you miss a day of work on top of that.
The problem with most shops anymore is either they don't have the equipment anymore or no one knows how to use it correctly.
I even had a mechanic at the Ford dealer walk by my truck while it was idling and got a comment 'Sounds like your HPOP or CPS is ready to go the way it is idling".
Makes me want to drive right over there so he can work on it.
1. Loosen the three nuts that hold the IP to the drive gear cover and turn the IP 3/32" top to the passenger side.
2. Tighten the nuts.
3. Now place a jumper from the positive battery terminal to the timing advance terminal.
4. Start the engine and let it idle.
5. Do you here a slight ignition rattle as it idles?
A. If yes, unplug the timing advance jumper, does it go away?
B. If yes, you are good to go.
If no rattle, repeat steps 1 thru 5, then repeat test A and B.

Back in the 70's, fuel treatments were few and expensive.
So a couple cans (notice cans as in quart cans) of ATF to 150 gallons of fuel in each tank kept everything nice and clean in the fuel system.
But we only ran type F, which was red.
But back in those days, off road fuel was not red, everything was high sulphur (5000 PPM) and everything was great.
Cold weather, 20 gallons of gasoline to 150 gallons of fuel and you never had to worry about gelling fuel either, again everything was good and everyone happy.
Fuel was under a dollar a gallon everywhere, lots lower in many places in the early 70's, everyone was really happy.
I remember paying the unheard of and totally highway robbery price of 1.659 a gallon in downtown NYC one winter night because I was stuck there overnight and did not have enough fuel for the truck to run all night and make Jersey the next day where fuel was .89 cents a gallon.
Yes, I have heard of running ATF, probably burnt 500 gallons or so myself during my driving career.
But today the red is a big problem.
Diesel Kleen treats more fuel for less money that ATF.
So I only use Diesel Kleen now.

Times like this make me start thinking of silly ways to get around this. Like how to separate the dye out of the ATF, or figure out what is it about ATF that will wake up a sticky injector pump governor in a matter of hours instead of days.
Some ATF is purple, but I'm pretty sure that stuff is synthetic (not to mention pricy)
I wonder if power steering fluid would work? Thats not normally red is it?

It's the detergents in the ATF.
ATF also has better lubricity than Diesel.
I have as well used cases of CANS (even have a scar to prove it) of type F in Diesels, We used a quart for every 50 gals, we also added it to the motor oil, 1/2 quart for every gallon.
To this day I add a quart to my motor oil a couple hundred miles before I change it, been doing it a long time!
-Enjoy
