Starter sticking on

Hey,

My buddy just bought a house that came with an old 79 F350, dually, dump bed. He's in the process of fixing it up to haul scrap and remodeling crap off the property.

We're having a problem with it. First off, I replaced the ignition module and fuel pump with newer ones I had laying around. We replaced the ignition switch with a brand new one as well.

The truck will fire and run, however, the starter sticks on until you pull the red trigger wire off the solenoid. Once the wire has been removed you can replace it and the starter stays disengaged.

What could be the problem here? I'm all out of ideas... Thanks.

Erik

Hi sounds to me like the solinoid is sticking. Try a new one. It should only be around $10 bucks

I put a newish one on that I had laying around. I think I used it on one of my trucks for a few months. Problem still remains...

You have some wires crossed then.

What do you mean "RED" trigger wire? A PO might have rigged up something that isn't factory then.

It's a red wire with some tracer on it. Can't remember the color. Here's the kicker.

I can manually disengage the solenoid by removing the trigger wire, however, if I replace the trigger wire right away, the solenoid does not re-engage. Some circuit, I'm guessing, is being disengaged once the trigger is removed, and is not re-engaged until the key is recycled back to the "start" position.

I don't have a wiring diagram, so I'm having a hard time tracing all the wires.

Let's get some more information. The next time it sticks, remove the wire on the 'S' post. According to you, this is when the solenoid disengages. Immediately measure the voltage on the wire boot you removed. A test light will suffice as well.

One of my favorite things about working on trucks is that there is a logical explanation for everything, no matter how wild a problem seems at first.
