E Series V10

Hey guys, I am looking to replace my '03 E350 extended cargo van and I ran across a 2006 model with a V10. Here's what I know (or think I know), this is a 2 valve motor like the older trucks had, but it does use the Torqshift trans? The gear selector is marked PRND321 and my 4R100 has no "3", so I assume this means Torqshift? The van has 65,000 miles on it, but I suspect it has spent some time idling since it has a huge power inverter in it. I have read a lot of posts in this forum, so I know you V10 guys get some high miles out of these engines, but do you think this engine has 100k more left in it? Are there any nuances or "gotcha's" with the V10 in a van? I know some of the past problems with the V10 were spark plugs and exhaust studs, are these still an issue in a 2006 van? Of course I can't start a V10 thread without asking about fuel economy. How much worse will the V10 get than the 5.4/4 speed vans? Thanks.

Yep the the 06' E-series (not 150) will have the torqshift and it retain the 2V V10. If they are using the 2V yet I'd say there is a possibility the studs may break at some point. More threads were added to the 2V heads in the 03' model year so spitting plugs isn't an issue. I'd say if you take care of the vehicle the engine could have 200k+ more miles in in it. As for mpg I'd say towing mpg is probably the same but the 5.4l would more than likely edge out the v10 in unloaded mpg.

Forgot about that. Was the drive by wire system mandated by the US goverment? I heard it was.

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure if it had the Torqshift, because for whatever reason, the 5.4 vans use a 4R75E, even the '09s. This van will not tow very much, if at all, but it will be pretty loaded up with parts, tools, ladders, etc. I don't need the V10, but if it will not be too much of a mpg penalty, I would rather have the Torqshift. As for drive by wire, is that bad? I have owned three different 7.3l trucks with it and haven't noticed anything bad.

Nothing bad with Drive by Wire just a little different throttle feeling when driving.
