I have a V10 extended passenger van E350 with torqshift 2005. I have Mikes 5 Star program on the van and have had it on there for 4 years in 89 octane tune.
My engine revs up between shifting gears from 2nd to 3rd. All other gears work fine except I have had a delay engaging reverse for about a year now.
I put it on 87 regular tune but that didn't change the shift from 2-3 it goes up a few hundred rpms and then engages the 3rd gear. This is definately a change in behaviour from normal quick engagement of 3rd gear.
Any help would be appreciated
Andrew.
Do I need to disconnect the battery or reset anything to let this thing relearn its
processing?
How old is the transmission fluid? Old fluid can cause a solenoid to stick and cause this.
Sometimes the learning software learns itself into a hole that it can't find it's way out of. The only way to fix that is to disconnect the batteries and let it relearn. You can run the relearn procedure, or not run it. It will learn either way, it is just faster if you run the procedure. You should be able to find it with a quick search.
If neither of these fix it the next suspect is a sticky intermediate solenoid.
HI Mark, thanks for posting in on my problem. The fluid is 18 months old and I changed the external filter. I have done this three times in 130,000 miles.
I did notice that when I changed it last time using the LM fluid that the solenoid problem in reverse went away, but came back after about 10k. Maybe i will just change it for a chance fix.
I noticed today that in normal mode it doesn't engage properly ( revs up then engages) from 2-3 change. then in tow/haul it shifts 2-3 fine and does the same slow engage from 3rd to 4th.
I will find the battery disconnect and relearn and see if that helps
Thanks again Mark.
I stopped at a Ford dealer here in New York today and the guy mentioned a solenoid pack. He also said that I could add Lucas shift enhancer to the fluid and it would make the solenoids move better. What do you think of that advice? The Lucas is awful thick to me!
Andrew.
Mark, I have done a youtube.com search on the 5R100 and found a guy who was pointing out the different solenoids. He referrred to them as B, C, D, so I don't know which one would be the intermediate solenoid. I would like to be able to tell the guys who work on this thing which solenoid it is, or do it myself if I don't have to take the valve body off to do it. Is there a way for you to describe which one that would be looking from under the tranny upward?
Oh and I wanted to mention Mark that I put a f250 10.5 ring gear sterling rear end in this 2005 van with 4.30 gears. I have done 45,000 miles since then and had no issues. I thought I would mention it in case you are aware of something I am not in doing this that would mess up anything in the tranny. It tows really well with this set up

Before adding the Lucas make sure to have enough money on hand to replace all the solenoids and rebuild the trans. I don't know that you will need it, but you should be ready.
In my experience, all the solenoids, (except EPC/PC-A with the blue arrow) are easily removed with out dropping the valve body. The electrical harness connector being immediately behind EPC/PC-A prevents it's moving far enough to be removed with out dropping the whole valve body and removing the connector first.

Stay away from that stuff. If it would help the transmission it would be specified by those who designed them. Don't add to your problems by dumping snake oil into your transmission.
Mark, thanks for the picture, helps a lot. I am planning the change the intermediate solenoid on Monday, I was wondering if I should change the low/reverse one too because of the sluggish reverse engagement? Does the intermediate one affect the reverse too?
Appreciate all the help from everyone.
Andrew.
Update. I went and put the two solenoids in the tranny this morning. Low/Reverse and the Intermediate. Replaced the internal filter and external filter. The external filter had a powder of black clutch material on it from the slipping into third gear. There was some metal on the magnet. I have never pulled the pan before in 130k. Always replaced the external filter and 8 qts in the pan once a year - every 25k.
So the dealer said there was an update and did it, no difference. He checked for wiring, electrical issues and said there were none. His conclusion is that its hydraulic or mechanical, so I ordered a rebuilt ford certified transmission for $3200.
The only thing I cannot work out is why the engine revs/ flares going into third in D but in tow/haul mode it shifts into third perfectly, but flares into 4th instead, the exact same way. If there is something wrong with the internals, why does it work properly in tow/haul in third gear? Mark I would appreciate your comments on this too if you would.
Andrew.
The learning is different in and out of tow/haul. It may have learned something it shouldn't have to cause this problem. Disconnect the batteries and leave them disconnected for a half hour. Then reconnect them and drive it. The shifts will be worse at first, but they should get better.
Mark, I went out this morning and disconnected the battery for 2 hours. No difference. Driven about 50 miles today with many gear changes and no difference. I am thinking that it is the clutch pack of 3rd gear. Reverse engages partially and then engages fully 4 seconds later. There was more clutch material in the external filter than I have seen in the many times I have changed it. Its very probable that what you said about needing to disconnect the battery should have been done when I went from 89 tow setting to 87. It shifted softly into third from that time but seemed to learn the procedure and behaved normally after that. But then started acting up seriously after towing 2k miles.
Thanks for the input and help from all of you. I'll let you know how I get one with the new transmission. Its Ford certified for 100k miles. that means someone other than ford rebuilt it but they are willing to warranty it. At least I can get it warrantied any where in the country.
Anyone had any experiences with ford certified torqshift trannies?
I got the van back last night with the certified 5R110W in it. All is well, except they overfilled it by a quart and by the time it heated up coming home it was spewing tranny fluid out of the vent on top of the transmission. It seems to have stopped now after 100 miles and the tranny is full. I was able to pull the dog house off and confirm that it was coming from the vent. Simple mistake. Thanks for all the help
