Mike I am hoping you could chime in and give me some ideas whats wrong.
I have had your tune on my 2005 V10 extended two wheel drive van for 4 years and been very happy. 130,000 several fluid changes and external filter changes, fluid is good and full.
It has started revving up between 2nd-3rd gear changes, not a lot but it doesn't snap into gear like it did before and its slow to engage that 3rd gear.
My reverse has been slow to engage for about a year now.
Apart from that it works fine.
I went from the 89 tow to 87 tow just to see if there was a difference, no difference. I went back to the 89 tow and its the same.
Do I need to disconnect the battery on the vehicle to reset anything.
Any help much appreciated
Andrew.
Sounds like a possible solenoid issue. If your van has the 5R110, it is known to have issues with some "flaring" when upshifting. My 04 had that problem and I replaced the solenoid with a high performance unit that holds a higher pressure level and it worked great.
Yes it has the 5100 tranny. Very interested in where you got that upgraded solenoid from and if it is simply in the pan and an easy install.
Appreciate the response
Andrew.
Just Google 5R110 performance solenoid. I got mine off eBay for $139. But you'll find them on a lot of performance sites. It's an fairly easy install that only requires removing the pan to get to. There's also a few nice threads with pictures over on the powerstroke forum on how to install it.
I replaced the solenoids for intermediate and low/reverse today and no change. Went to Ford and they updated the ECU no change, checked the electrical and nothing showed up. They say its hydraulic/mechanical and I need a rebuild.
The only thing I cannot make sense of is that in D the 2-3 shift flares up engine rpm and then engages. In tow/haul it shifts 2-3 perfectly and then flares the same way for the 3-4th gear change. If its internal hydraulic/mechanical, why does it shift fine 2-3 in tow mode? I don't understand that. AE
Replaced the tranny. Ford certified 100k warranty with a couple of sensors and tax $3500. It now shifts like normal, I am going to leave it stock for a while and see if I can live with the tow/haul mode. I don't like not being able to lock it in 4th gear, but will give the updated program a try that ford put on it. thanks for the help
