I had my auto trans rebuilt 12k ago and the pan is leaking already. Is there such a thing as a pan gasket that will not leak? Are they put on dry or is a sealant used, with or without the gasket? I've always have had the pan leak and I'm tired of it. Also, who sells a pan with a drain plug in it? Thanks
I'm on my 3rd transmission and I never had the pan leak. The gaskets are reusable and are put on without any sealant. For a pan with a drain plug just go to Ford and get a pan for a 99-03 SouperDooty with a 4R100. They have the drain plug and are a deeper pan, you'll also need to use a different filter. The filter for an OBS 4x4 is the right length to use with the SD pan.
Glenn,
You are just a bundle of leaks, your going to have to start wearing "Depends"
There are a bunch of manufactures of pans with drain plugs, I think if I was going to change pans I would get a cast aluminum, they're heaver in construction and probably not as apt to leak. jmho
With that said, the other day I ordered several coils of auto electrical wire on EBay from an outfit named "Summit Racing Equip." they shipped that wire so fast it scared me, I couldn't believe it, anyway they sent me a catalog and while I was surfing thru it last night I noticed they advertised several cast alum pans.

Rog, Are you suggesting that I wear the depends or the truck, lol? I have a BD deep dish pan but all it did was leak also. BD did send me a new gasket for it but I never did use it. I read on here that the extra oil doesn't help with cooling, it hurts cooling. I don't know one way or the other. Thanks for the info, I'll look into it. Can depends be had in extra large size for a truck?
Ya know Glenn, this extra amount of ATF argument is kind of like arguing about Politics and/or Religion. I too have read that extra ATF adds to the heat factor and not the cooling. I personally don't buy that argument.
The engine is cooled by three (3) factors: Water, Oil and Air flow.
The tranny is cooled by Two (2) factors: ATF and Air flow through the cooler. Me thinks, the more ATF there is the more heat is absorbed and carried to the cooler. If this was not true why does Ford put a larger tranny pan on the 4X4?
ANSWER:
Because there is more heat being generated and there is a greater need for more ATF to carry the additional heat to the cooler.
All of the above is my opinion and no squirrels were harmed while forming this opinion.
I have never had a leak with the Ford reuseable gasket and a pan that is flat. Most people tighten the bolt too tight and bend the pan. 12 ft lbs of toque for the pan bolts.
