Hi all. I have been interested in a DP tuner and a BTS VB for a while. However, being 17, scraping the money together while still managing to put some away in the bank is tough. Also, it seems like every time I have just about enough for both, something breaks, and that drains my wallet . In addition to the money issues, I do have a lingering fear that it will mess something up. I mean, don't get me wrong, I really trust you guys and know Jody has a great business. It just seems like if it could remain reliable, and be more powerful, it would have come that way from the factory. Anyway, I guess I want to know if anyone has problems with their truck that resulted from the DP tuner or BTS VB. I should be able to save enough this summer, if my truck doesn't blow up, to get them both- I just want to be sure that I don''t spend money and end up kicking myself (I've done that enough times).
Thanks
Ahhhhh...to be 17 again and think that the way the factory made it must have been the best set-up....wait a minute....I NEVER thought that way.
Ford built it with a few things in mind. The most important being profit margin. they COULD have built it to be more powerful AND more reliable, they just wanted to make the MOST money with the Least amount of complications. The whole reason that BTS is in business is because of the large area of improvement possible in the 4R100's, and the whole reason there is a Banks, and DP tuner, and PHP, and tony Wildman, is because there is so much room for improvement and in a reliable manner.
If you treat your truck well, and do the proper maintenance, with those items you won't have any issues caused by them.

Thanks
You have to think about it this way, though.... Is Ford perfect? Do they make things to last forever, or do they build for emminent failure? You're already experiencing the fact that Ford (nor any other car maker) wants their vehicles to last as long as possible because they also want to be in the parts & repair business, which is what makes them lots of money. It's not hard to really investigate how Ford engineers designed some real booboo's into their vehicles, like the cheap tranny diode that was a huge flaw an cost owners lots of money in premature tranny rebuilds.
There are lots of guys running the BTS and JW and Trango tranny upgrades, and a lot of that is BECAUSE they want to protect the tranny from the power that comes from the DP and TW and PHP style chips. If you whip without the gauges and tranny upgrades, you'll face imminent tranny death and engine damage. Install teh intake, exhaust, and gauges, then do a tranny upgrade, and you're ready for the chip... just get it in the right order and you'll have a lot of fun.
If you want to save some $$$, by the TransGo HD-2 kit and put it in yourself BEFORE ordering your chip. Should be around $70. Then you'll have a BTS-like VB already. When you're ready to pull the trigger on tunes, you can tell Jody (or whoever you go with) you have a mod'ed trans... Used to be the F5 was $200 and came with one custom tune (besides stock & no-start). So for something like $250, you can have Stock, No-Start, 80E, and 120R. That's what I got at first. You're looking at $320 roughly for both a mod'ed trans and a DP. That's if the F5 price is still accurate (it's been 2 years).
Knowing me, I would probably spazz out and mess something up drilling into my own VB. I have never dug into an automatic transmission, so the thought of a Transgo is quite intimidating. It is good to hear that people aren't having problems. I tow about 8k (horse trailer) and rarely hay wagons (really heavy, but only 5 miles at 25 mph.) So, I think I would want stock, 80e, 60t, and 120r. I could see myslef at the racetrack from time to time too... Oh, also, the exhaust was done by the previous owner. I don't think the downpipe is 4", it looks liek the stock 3.5". Is this a problem?
