Hi there:
I have a 4.6 in my van; they are generally great engines. However, you are buying a 10 year old truck with 170,000 miles on it. Buying any used vehicle of that age and mileage is a risk. Depending on how the vehicle was cared for, it could either be ready to go another 100,000 km/miles, or it could almost be ready for a junkyard. Focus on getting a good idea of the condition of that truck before you complete the deal...are any service records available? Do you have access to a mechanic who could inspect it on a hoist? Check out the transmission carefully as well as the engine for leaks or any types of problems. Carfax? Prior accidents? Any rust?

Good luck,
George

As far as reliability, the 4.6 is a great engine. I own two of them, a windsor with 155K miles and a romeo with 82K miles. But like yogeorge said, you need to find out a little more about the truck. Even the best engines can be bad at that mileage if there are not cared for. Ask a lot of questions and ck the truck over real well. I would have to say, you will probably be ok, as long as you do the maintance now that the previous owner neglected, if any. Let us know what you decide.
