Hi all I have 1996 Ford with the 4.6 litre engine. On the way home from work while driving at freeway speed I got a low coolant warning. I quickly pulled off of the highway and shut engine off. There was coolant pouring out from the back bottom of the engine. I towed it home and have put it up on ramps to get a closer look. I can see water coming from the area between the transmission and the back of the engine . It does not appear to be coming from the top of the engine. Any ideas?

 

The only place in there for a leak would be one of the core plugs that are located in the bell housing area just below the cylinder heaqds. The repair will require that the trans be removed for access if the coolant is coming from that area. Before ripping it apart make sure it's not a heater hose lhat is in that general area behind the passenger side head also look under the intake runners and see if there is coolant there as Ford put a coolant hose in the valley just behind the water pump. In either case you are in for a bunch of work.
