Another c-6 question

I asked this on the tranny forum but no response yet.

Anyone here know how to change the extension housing seal on a 74 c-6?

Drop the drive shaft, pull it out of the extension housing, (place a catch pan under it if it has fluid in it), and then I usuall use a big screwdriver to pry or pop out the seal. Make sure the new seal you have is the right one by checking the OD with the tranny and the seal ID by slipping it up over the drive shaft. Don't do this dry, put a little ATF on it first. If all is well then use a wood block and something like a dead blow hammer to drive it into the housing. I usually use a little grease around the outside of it before driving it in. Be sure to keep it even as you drive it in. If you don't and it starts in sideways, it may leak even after it straightens out. Even for a beginner this should not take over a half hour. Remember to replace any lost fluid.

All the above assumes that you are doing this in the vehicle. If you have the tranny apart on the bench, then it would be better to use a press. There are probably specialized tools available but I have never used them and I have never had a problem.

Thanks Dave, I think I asked the wrong question. In an earlier post NumberDummy suggested that when replacing the rear seal that I should also replace the extension housing bushing, I mistakenly referred to it as a seal. I am wondering how to get the bushing R/R.

The bushing has to be pressed or driven out. You will need a press for this. If there is no slap or apparent looseness to it I would not change it. I have seen lots of them last over 100K and still be tight. This is one of those deals where if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Given the difficulty of the task and requirement for special equipment, it's not worth the gain unless it is worn enough to be noticeably loose.

thanks Dave, That is the advice I'd hoped to hear. Now I just need to get that new seal installed.
