I drive my truck 90% of the time on highway trips. About half of that is towing a travel trailer. From day one I have always had a regen after about 300-350 miles when not towing and about 150-175 miles when towing the trailer. This last month, things have changed. It barely comes out of regen now. Sometimes I don't even drive 25 miles before it starts a new one. I'm currently traveling and won't be able to get to my dealer for a few weeks. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do or check? I've tried disconnecting the batteries in the hope that it would reset something, but it didn't work. Prior to this the truck has never had a hiccup. It still seems to be running fine, but the mileage is in the crapper now as it's always regening.
Anyone else have a similar issue that they got fixed? Any techs have any ideas?
The engine and driveline is and has always been completely stock.

mine did the same thing after i got the new flash. it seems like it wasn't regening properly before and after a couple tanks of regen almost every day it finally cleared up. i did take the advice of unhooking both batteries and now i'm regening about every 3 to 4 hundred miles.

Yeah, I saw that post, that's why I tried unhooking the batteries. I have about 2000 miles to travel in the next two weeks so that should give it time to clear up if it's going to.
You might try using a cetane boost additive, I use Motorcraft, others use DieselKleen.
Your engine light MIGHT come on in a day or two as well. My engine ran in a strange way when a sensor went bad in the exhaust, engine light did not come on for a good 400 miles and it was the next day. If this happens to you, finding a dealer while you are on the road is pretty easy and the sensor can be replaced in a matter of minutes. Mine happened to go while I was in Florida and it just cost me an afternoon.
It is doesn't clear up then I would take it in and have them check the sensors at the DPF. Even though it is not throwing a code at least one of them may be bad and sending information to the pcm that a regen is required.

I got my truck back this morning after a DPF replacement. I towed a friends fifth wheel about a hundred miles when the cleaning exhaust msg. appeared. Another twenty miles the check engine light came on. I dropped the camper at the new location and headed home. The cleaning exhaust msg. was displayed for at least 100 of the 120 miles home. The truck ran great and the fuel mileage appeared to be normal. I wish I undersood all I know about this vehicle.

You could either be stuck with another problem or the PCM/ECM might be going through a DPF conditioning program.
I hope it settles down for you, hate to see that folks have problems. I wish there was an official manual from Ford that would explain these engines to us. Seems like a few pages of "If/Then" statements would clear up a lot of our curiosity.

You can bet I will be standing at the service manager's door with that guess what happened now look tomorrow morning.
I agree with you about a decent owners manual.
Mine starting doing the same thing at about 10,000 miles on it. The Dealer did a re-flash and cured it. However, it now does a regen at 75 to 130 miles, with or without the trailer

Thanks Joe, how many miles have you put on after the re-flash? I would hate to think that a regen every 75-130 miles is normal.
it is not, mine can aver 250-300 sometimes more or sometimes but not anything in that short of a distance.
maybe you can help me. mine will regen at 75 to 130 with or without the trailer. I just made a trip from Waco to Seattle so my fuel has come from many different places I am burning 5.6mpg to 6.2mpg and the dealership says this is all normal. without the trailer, I can sometimes get 9.75 mpg My trk is 08 F550 crewcab 4:88 gears

I am starting to wonder if anyone knows what's NORMAL.
I got a call from a Ford Customer Service rep concerning my complaint of sooted up tailpipes. I was asked how many miles I had on the truck. When I responded that I had 4001 miles and it had only regenerated once, I got the THAT'S NORMAL for the first 5000 mile break-in. One would think after being in service for nearly 3 years they would have a better handle on this emission system.
