waco it sounds like those gears on a highway setting or towing are killing you. i had an older truck with gears like that if you drove over 55mph you could watch the needle drop that may be it.? i dunno though. hunter i agree with wat they are saying i've learned alot about my truck from wat senix posts so take his word on that kinda issue. however i've heard of dpfs going bad or if you slipped up and used low sulfur diesel and plugged it up the frequent regen may clear up, if not take it on it they'll warranty it if thats the case, and just dont tell the dealership any info haha
I had a regen this past Saturday on the way down to Statesville, NC. It started about half way down Fancy Gap mountain and lasted about 15 minutes. It was one of the best regens I've had because it was all down hill (no boost). Had the cruise set on 70 MPH and my MPG's didn't drop like they usually do. I always reset my trip B at the start of regen and when I checked it it read 671 miles.
I got my truck back this morning after a DPF replacement. I towed a friends fifth wheel about a hundred miles when the cleaning exhaust msg. appeared. Another twenty miles the check engine light came on. I dropped the camper at the new location and headed home. The cleaning exhaust msg. was displayed for at least 100 of the 120 miles home. The truck ran great and the fuel mileage appeared to be normal. I wish I undersood all I know about this vehicle.
I just left the dealer with the check engine light and regen healed. The story is loose connection. The truth is, forgot to connect the EGT sensor when replacing the DPF.
Hoping all is well as we head for Yellowstone Monday.
I am not sure whu it does a 'regen' so frequently except maybe the low mpg's I get. I can put up with the low mpg because I need (or want) the heavy towing package. Mine is rated for a 24,000 lb trailer. I love the truck and will put up with the frequent regen's plus low milage IF it does not have the exhaust in the cab. I only have 22k miles but love the way it pulls the trailer. best tow rig I have owned and I have had some sort of 5th wheel continously since 1974.
Has anyone else had a problem of exhaust in the cab during low speeds with the "cleaning exhaust filter" mode in operation?
Update- after my 2000+ miles of highway driving the truck is back to normal. My guess is I got some bad fuel that it had to clear out. After running 3 or 4 tanks it started regenning less frequently.
The Service Mgr at the dealership now tells me they found an exhaust leak in the "down pipe" and have repaired it. I got the truck back yesterday so I'll drive it today on an errand that will be about 100 miles of freeway driving. We'll see how it works now.
I got my 450 Monday w/320 miles on it. Now at 1186. Regens at 473/629/787. None since. Mileage dropped each time about .5 mpg. Hard to note when they start if not looking at message ctr when it pops up--then I don't know for sure when it started, just when it finishes. Also had a message many times "drive slowly in circle" then "compass recalibration completed" then a repeat of same "compass recalibration completed." Kind of goofy, I was driving in a straight line each time. Seems to have stopped doing this.
I think the frequency of 'regen' is connected to the amount of fuel burned, rather than milage. My truck has the 4:88 gears, plus that overhead rack that extends fron the front of the bed to the supports off the front bumper. It is 6 ft wide with the center 4 ft of it being expanded metal. It is for my golf caft to ride above the cab when I am pulling my 5th wheel. So my mpg is in the toilet. However when I drove it today the "cleaning exhaust filter" can on and stayed on for 12.9 miles at 60 mph on the freeway. I did slow down at an exit just to see if it was fixed. It still has the exhaust coming into the cab if you get below 20 mph while it is in regen mode.
When your message board reads "cleaning exhaust filter" just hit the reset button and it will read your trip odometer and so on. after a short time it will revert back to the regen message, but you can check you milage IF you want.

I agree mine was regening about every 250 to 300 miles not pulling anything getting around 17 mpg now on a trip with 9000# 5th wheel and getting 9 mpg its regening at 100 to 150 miles which makes sense because I'm burning more fuel.
You guys are right on the regen cycle. Been driving my truck around for 2 years now and I can almost tell when a cycle is coming.
With a heavy trailer, it will happen up to 4 times per fuel tank, which can be as little as 210 miles.
Empty, can be twice per tank, or, every 200 miles or so. Stop and go makes it happen faster.
Just so you know, there are air pressure sensors in the filter, when the backpressure reaches a certain value, a regen cycle is started. Every now and then I can trigger a cycle by going full throttle from a stop, doing 0-60 as fast as possible.
Another thing, when towing 8,000 plus, your EGT's are almost always above 900 degrees, 1200 degrees is required for a DPF cleanout, therefore, not much extra fuel is needed to heat the DPF up, so, it has less of an effect on your MPG's. On the other hand, we're still burning a lot of fuel to pull the trailer. It's a wash but at least the fuel is moving you forward instead of just burning up in the DPF!
I have the goofiness of the regen figured out as to when and why, but my MAJOR problem is still with me. Every time the regen is in operation and I slow down to 10-20 mph, I get "exhaust" IN the cab. It (the exhaust) is coming in through the air vents for heater/air cond. If I turn off the heater-a/c controls, I only get a small amount of exhaust. If I turn the blower up high, I can run you out of the truck in 15 seconds. The shop says they cannot find anything wrong.
My dealer here in SC has replaced bolts on the exhaust manifold. Not mine, but it's happened.
It's Ballentine Ford, Lincoln, Merc., Greenwood, SC. Give them a call and ask to speak with the Shop Manager or the diesel tech. named Paul. They are nice people and won't mind a phone call.

TSB 07-7-7 deals with exhaust odor inside 6.4L vehicle and/or exhaust smoke may be visible from the front of the vehicle.
It suggests to follow the Service Procedure steps to inspect the turbocharger to exhaust down pipe connection for a leak.
Thanks for the info. I found out that the shop has yet to pull the cab off and inspect anything. I believe it is time to let the attorney handle it from here on out. My truck has been in the shop for all but 6 days since April 6, 2009. I believe they have had time to repair 'something'. I also believe Ford is trying to save money and are telling the dealers to stall any work on these trucks. I had the service manager tell me that exhaust in the cab is "normal" according to Ford.
