What is the difference between Mercon and Mercon V transmission fluid? The fluid level dipstick on my '94 calls for Mercon, but I have been told that I could use Mercon V. Newer Ford products use Mercon V, but should not use Mercon. Need a little information on this.

Mercon V is a synthetic blend fluid. It is ok to put it in some vehicles that origially called for Mercon III (I put it in my 97 XR7) but I am unsure as to which transmissions are ok.
You have an E4OD and should only use mercon, not the V. The E4OD/4R100 have not been changed to the new synthetic fluid yet. I would suggest using a Ford transmission filter though. I have seen some after markets that cause problems after a few miles.
Charlez- You had a 4R70W in your cougar and that was about the time that ford had a problem with torque converter shudder. The new mercon V fixed that, depending on mileage they changed the fluid and/or the converter.

Just to clarify this statement - synthetic is fine in the E4OD/4R100, but ONLY MERCON synthetic. MERCON V is a no-no in these transmissions according for Ford.
There are conventional, synthetic blends, and full synthetic MERCON and MERCON V fluids available.
Appreciate the information. I will make certain that only Mercon replaces the existing fluid in addition to the utilization of a Ford filter. Your input has been extremely helpful.

I've been reading the posts and responses re:Mercon/MerconV. Is there any harm in my having just dumped 13+ quarts of DexronIII into the trans of my 1999 E350 with a 5.4L gas engine (think it has an E4OD)? I drained the converter as well (pipe plug in converter housing), think it should take 15qts?

It depends what transmission you have. Some 5.4L have the 4R100 and some have the 4R70W. It's fine with the 4R100, but it doesn't have an anti-shudder additive that the 4R70W MUST have.
Look at the blue tag in the driver's door opening. Under TR there will be either an E or a U. U is 4R70W and E is 4R100.

I put mobil one synthetic in my 93 bronco that I bought new at 30k and it has yet to be changed. The guy I sold it to has 285,000 miles on it without a single problem. He did countinue to use mobil one full syn in the engine as well. Mine had the 5.0, great truck, sometimes I wish I still had it. I highly recomend a full synthetic transmission fluid in that E4OD transmisson or EOD.
