Hey all,
I am thinking about getting a banks quick turbo housing for my 96. It replaces the stock exhaust side and is supposed to make the turbo spool up quicker. My question is has anyone tried one of these with the stock turbo? I am wondering if I need to upgrade the turbo with it.
Thanks for the help.
That sucks if egt's will be higher! I already have a problem with them going through the roof now, but I can't afford the $1200 intercooler yet. so for now I am going to re gear the axles to 4:10 to help with towing. I thought the quicker spool on the turbo would help on towing also.
If you're going to piece parts together over time, suggest you start with a downpipe.
I installed a full Banks PowerPack (downpipe, turbo housing, intercooler, chip, gages, transmission chip) in stages. Truck already had a 6637 air filter, which I kept instead of the Banks/K&N filter. I did the downpipe first, and noticed a modest improvement in drivability. Not spectacular, but noticably less sluggish around town.
Adding the turbo exhaust housing didn't seem to add any improvement, nor did the intercooler. I didn't install the gages until after the intercooler, so I don't know how exhaust gas temperatures changed. Presumably EGTs went down with the downpipe and then intercooler, but I have no data.
Chip was a very big improvement, but it needed the other airflow mods. I have a big grin on my face after the chip went in.
If your choice is turbo housing or downpipe, choose downpipe.
Most folks don't like the Banks kits, mostly on price and somewhat on performance. The standard knock is that you can get more power for less price by piecing together your own system, including parts acquisition, fabrication, fitting, tuning, and assembly. Personally, I don't have the time or skills to fabricate and piece together a system, and I like that the Banks stuff works together as a safe-for-engine system. I'll trade cash for no hassle. If you want a safe, less-hassle upgrade system, the full Banks package may be for you. Yes, I would do a full Banks system again; but if I was just doing a piece or two I would go with a downpipe and then maybe gages.
I already have a 3" downpipe, 4" straight pipe exhaust, edge evolution 3stage programmer, and 6637 air filter. and when I pull my 32 foot fifth wheel with atv trailer behind that It still pegs the EGT's extremely fast. and when I pull a fairly steep grade I have to keep backing out of the throttle because the EGT's climb so fast. I have gotten down to 30 miles per hour in 2nd gear 3000 rpms just to get up the grade and that holds the EGT's at 1200 degrees. I am frustrated because I know that I could hook up this same load to my 74 highboy and go over the same grade at 60 miles per hour no problem, and I would if I could fit my family in it.
So your changing gearing and that is cheaper than an intercooler install? You must be real good at differentials. Just curious. But you will still have pretty high EGTs' even if your go to 4.10 gearing. Is it a manual or auto?
It is a manual I know the EGT's will still be high. I just think if I lower the gear ratio the engine will have to work less to pull a load thus allowing a little more speed on the hills. The Intercooler is definately next on the list to lower EGT's. after the re gear in the axles.
