hey guys brand new to the forum and figured id pick your brains about interchange for my 84 f250. its a 2wd w/ the inline 6cyl. its got the c6 and i was wondering what other years of transmissions will work with mine. i keep finding older good c6 trans. or close in years but for bigger engines and i didn't know if i could use those or not. thanks for any help guys.
I haven't worked on a 300 6cyl (my own F250 is a 351W) but I've read repeatedly that the small block (302, 351W, 351C) version C6 will bolt straight up to your engine.
The big block (351M, 429, 460) trans has a larger bellhousing & bolt pattern.

thanks ken thats very helpful. would you have any tips on what to look for while shopping around for used transmissions? as far as trying to not get ripped off.
I'm in New Zealand, so I'm not that familiar with your second-hand parts market, but I've used craigslist to buy items over there in the past - that would be a good place to check on prices anyhow.
Someone else on the site will probably help out more
The only changes to look out for is the tail shaft housing, some of the 70's trucks changed the length of the tail shaft and housing. Otherwise, as noted, anything bolted to a 300,302, 351W will bolt up with no issues.
When you look at a tranny, pull the dipstick and look at the color and smell the fluid. The fluid should be anything from bright pink to a dark maroon. Really dark and brown looking with a burnt smell would be sign to pass on that tranny and look for another.
Don't overlook car trannies either, but keep in mind you may have to change out the shift linkage, but that isn't too bad to do. The linkage on the car trannies have the orientation different than the trucks. Simply swap out the linkage for your truck linkage, and it will be fine.
