Hi, I am pretty new at maintaining 4x4 trucks...right now i'm working on a 2004 F250 super duty fx4 and i had to replace all the seals for my front axles and i got through with almost everything myself but now I am about to get done but i can't seem to get the axle seal in place without completely destroying it in the process. Is there a tool out there or some sort of technique to installing it that i should know? as far as tools, i just got a 3.5" piece of pipe and tried hammering it on there but that's what caused me to destroy the seal, so if there's anyone out there who can help me out i'd really appreciate it!
I just got finished doing the same task. There is a special tool but I can not find the part num right now. I am also told you can take the seal and axle to a ford dealer and they will instal it for you. As for me, I used a piece of 3" PVC pipe and after a couple of trys I was able to seat the seal.
x2 on the home made driver out of 1-1/4" galvanized pipe. You'll likely need to spend some time on a grinder to get the diameter of the flange down to about 3.875". I had a machinist friend turn it down on a lathe but a grinder would do the job too. Here's mine.....
You also use it to drive the axle back into the knuckle....
The special ford tool actually has a flat base and is larger than the seal diameter. You could use a piece of particle board or plywood with a hole drilled in it, then use a piece of pipe over the axle shaft to drive it on. (Drive it on the stub before inserting it in the knuckle, not like how the pic above shows.) I took mine to the dealer and they drove them on for free.
Thanks guys! That tool worked like a dream, now ive just got to try to locate some decent priced wheel bearings for the truck and hopefully i should be done with that part of it!
