The other day I stumbled into my local dealership to look at their used F-150's. I figured that the lot would have a large amount to see since the 09's are out and people are rushing to get them to be the first on their blocks with one.
I found an '06 XLT 4.6 4X4 SC with 17,000 miles on it. The asking price is 22K. The truck is beautiful. Black exterior with grey interior.
What are your thoughts? Anything particular to look out for on these trucks?
Just bought my '06 XLT after 6wks of looking. Price is just a tick steep, but mileage is good. I joined here and did a ton of research before buying. Only "issue" I had was after a week of buying the wrench "idiot light" came on. Had the codes read and it came up as a trouble code having to do w/the throttle body. Had codes reset and not a problem as of yet. My truck was also lifted 6" w/aftermarket tires and wheels. I love my Fords and love my first truck.
Oh, write down the VIN and make sure all Recall's and TSB's have been completed. Friend of mine has an 06 FX4 and supposedly there is a TSB on brake booster hose or something to that effect.
The asking price is high, especially for a 4.6L. However, that's just a starting point. Keep in mind, low mileage or not it's still 3+ years old. I'd give $17K for that being that its an XLT and 4.6L. For their asking price I'd expect it to be a KR or Lariat with the 5.4L.
Keep looking, if you settle for a 4.6 you'll wish you got the 5.4, the MPG difference is negligible. You should also be aware of the spark plug issues with the '04 to '06 models. Read up on it, it may scare you enough to hold out for an '07.
no offense meant to anyone for this following statement. You're always going to have people tell you the price is too high or that they bought there's cheaper or could get it cheaper. There's just so many factors that play into buying a truck (at least to me anyways) that it seems even when I've gotten a great deal over the years, someone else got an even better one.
Maybe the dealer was having a bad month, right time-right place, they're good at haggling, etc. I say if the price looks good to you, you should get it. I never post topics like "I just got my truck for x amount out the door". Mainly because then I hear someone got a better truck cheaper and I feel screwed over by the dealership. It's just how it goes.
Again, hopefully no one takes offense to my post as I don't mean it in a negative way. Just trying to get the point across that if it's a comfortable price for you then you should get the truck IMO.
Check the Blue Book for your area! I won't mention price but I picked up my 06 F150 XLT 5.4 scab 4x4 with 42,000 mi for $4,000 under BB. I bought of last month and love it! Can't wait to put some after market goodies on it!
I have the exact same truck only maroon, and I love it kinda wish I had the 5.4 but the 4.6 is a very capable motor. Haven't found anything to give me problems when it comes to towing boat's, cars, etc. It's very capable off road, and the aftermarket is wide open. I am only some 35's with 4.56 gears away from being done with mine.
I understand the comment above...but for 1 or 2 little things
You can buy a brand new 2009 version of that truck fir about $3-4,000 more. I'm sure it is a nice truck. But it is a XLT with the 4.6.
$22k is asking price for a top of the line truck...not the entry level middle package truck.
I would be looking for $15-17,000 out the door price. Or just buy brand new. Take a look at them. I'm dead serious about brand new ones only being slightly more $$$
Talked to the salesman twice today. So far have them giving me 11K for my truck and down to 20K for the Black XLT.
Still working on them. I really love the truck, but the saleman doesn't know that.
I looked at it again today on my way home from work.
So they're moving on the price, good. Just tell them what you're willing to pay and wait them out...they'll eventually get down to your price. It might just take a week or two. Good Luck!

lol...SO TRUE...(oh wait, you offended me)
The mileage between a 4.6 and 5.4 is negligible, and the mileage between a 4.0 and a 5.4 is also. These things with a 5.4 get the same mileage I got in a 4.0 Ranger. Good luck on your purchase (to the OP) 22k does seem a little steep for an '06 XLT. Low miles though.
I have same truck your looking at buying expect I have the 5.4 and I have seem many trucks that are just like mine on the dealers lots for around 17-19.5k....with the 5.4
I just bought the same truck except 5.4 and 42,000 miles for 19,000 in Feb, and where I live 4x4 trucks sell quick. I also got top dollar trade on my old F-150. Hope this helps.
