If there are not a lot of trucks normally or another brand is more preferred it will effect prices as well.
In Houston I got a white 06 XLT Scab 5.4L, 3.73LS, premium sound with 6 cd mp3/wma, upgraded Michilens(that still have most of the little nibs) tires on chrome clad 17", towing package, 6.5' standard side bed, with moon/sunroof for 16k that had 9800 miles on it when I got it. The ad had it listed at just under 9300 miles. After talking with the dealership she got it from she just never drove it much since she got it to just tow a little pop up trailer for her and her little dog. Same trucks with 4-5 times the mileage were going for 2-4 grand more minus sunroof around here at the dealers.
Another truck I had looked at was a black and silver almost just like the truck I got except for the sunroof and had the 4.6L but it had a soft cover for the bed and 2 very small dings on the lower panels(most likely rocks). It also had 45K miles on it but they were asking almost 18k for it.
Whatever truck you get...get the truck you want...the one you will love. The one that will make you want to hand wash it at least once a month and point at to your friends and go that is MY truck. If not you will be jonsing for the truck you should have bought and it will drain the enjoyment out of having a newer truck. I know I love the truck I bought and don't regret picking up a truck note again for it. Also doesn't hurt that my APR on this truck is only 40% of my previous old truck's loan. I got jacked on my first two trucks because my credit was crummy.
3 weeks ago I got an scab lariat, loaded, 36Kmiles excellent condition 5.4 18"tires, sunroof etc etc. From what I could gather new this would have been in the $38K range when new. A few years ago i got the ol lady an escalade w/ 32 Kmiles, loaded that with all the options listed at @ 47K, bought the caddy for 24, 3 yrs ago had to replace a power window mod that was bad, but under warranty. Got the truck for @ 17K. Don't see how you can go wrong w/ these kinds of vehicles. I kind of feel like Tony Stewart in his commercial for armor all (minus the kisses)
I live in northern Indiana and $22K seems high for an 06 XLT with even that kind of mileage. I bought my 06 XLT s/c 4X4, 5.4L, trailer tow, captains chairs and console, 35 gallon full tank, 17" aluminum wheels, 3.55 L/S, 6.5 ft bed, fog lights, and other stuff I don't use a year and a half ago for $19k. Prices in your area are comparable to my area and the economy hasn't picked up that much yet. Mine had 27K miles and was a lease return in excellent shape. It's silver and equipped almost exactly as I would have ordered it except for the gears. I would have gotten red with 3.73's if I would have ordered it. If I would have waited just 3 months I could have gotten the same or a nicer truck for $3K less due to the economy. And I would hold out for a 5.4L if possible. You're only talking about 1mpg difference between the two engines.
I decided to keep my Ranger for now. It will be paid off this September. After that I may see if I can get a better deal when the '10's start to roll out this fall.
In the mean time I will keep an eye out for a good deal somewhere and also watch gas prices.
you can get about $8-10k off the MSRP right now...so a $30-32,000 XLT would run you right about what that 2006 truck is priced...+ the money for your Ranger...you'd be sitting pretty IMO
Just be patient. You'll find what you want at a good price. I know a lot of dealers can still get lease returns, but they will dry up fairly soon because Ford is trying to keep leasing to a minimum thus limiting their exposure to vehicles that are actually worth less money than the risdual value. And like Tylus said, you may be able to get a really good deal on an 09. I'd love to have that 6 speed automatic tranmission.
