Alot of our puters at work have DOS and they are a pain in the **** to use. Lock up all the time and if you shut one down for any period of time takes FOREVER to reboot.....
I don't think that trick works with laptops, but I'm kind of like Danny on some computer issues.
I've been playing around trying different button combinations, and I can make all sorts of strange things happen, but no pretty symbols. I think I did figure out the number thing though. I forgot I had the number lock still on, and discovered with the number lock on, if you hold down the function key, the numbers do show up that way. I don't understand the purpose of this feature. If you've got to hold down a button to get the numbers to show up, why not just use the number buttons along the top of the keyboard?
DOS commands that I still remember.
copy
format
fdisk
net
dir
cd
del
These I had to look up.
mode
echo
exit
goto.
There's more, just launch a CMD window in XP or Vista and type: "help"
All the commands will scroll by.
My favorite was XCOPY... VERY handy... Don't forget CLS, and if you want to see all the commands without them flying by, use "help | more" The "|" is called "pipe" and is usually below the backspace key with the backslash.
I still use DOS windows & batch files all the time.
I grew up using C64 and and then moved to DOS 3.3 AAWWWW the good old days. I use command lines of a different nature nowadays, but still write a DOS Batch script here or there. I was going to mention character map, but someone beat me to it.
I started on a TRS-80 Model II, III, IV, then finally a "Color Computer"... I didn't start messing with a PC until '90. My roomate got a 286-12 with 640k of RAM and 40MB HD. Then he left, and I bought my first one -- a 386DX-25 with 2MB of RAM and 40MB HD. It had an S-VGA video card & 14" monitor, and I added a mono SoundBlaster card. I think I paid about $1900 for the whole thing. LMAO!!!
HOLD alt
press 2
press 4

ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD, the square-ish one on the right of the keyboard Rick!
release Alt
You get - °
Yeah, right. Takes two post to get me to do this. . I don't have the Key pad on the right. I do have blue things on some keys. Is this what you are saying???????????
He's an old Cajun Chase. You need to type in all caps so he can hear you.
Actually, your last post helped me. Rick, if you're on your laptop try this and let me know if you get the same thing. Press the number lock button, then press function & alt at the same time and hold them down. Then press J (the 1 key with the number lock). After you let go of the FN & ALT keys, the symbol appears.
Here's what I get.
FN & ALT and J (1)= ☺
FN & ALT and K (2) =☻
FN & ALT and L (3) =♥
FN & ALT and U (4) =♦
FN & ALT and I (5) =♣
FN & ALT and O (6) =♠
FN & ALT and & (7) =•
FN & ALT and * (8) =◘
FN & ALT and 9 (9) =○
FN & ALT and K U O * (2468) = ñ
Since the symbol only appears after you release the 2 buttons, it's easy to just keep pushing buttons thinking nothing is happening. Still doesn't help the laptop crowd to talk about HPOP's. It ends up looking like 17○ on mine. I think I'll just stick with 17 deg. for now.

♂ Darn, Chris, I did what you said and it worked. But I will never remember what I just did. The 0 looks kind of low to me. I am a Cajun, so please type in caps so I can hear you.
