anyone know what the stock headunit (6 disc) puts out as far as speaker wattage?, I upgraded the speakers soon after I bought it but am thinking of installing an amp.. thats all I want to do....
I don't think ford releases a RMS rating for the 6 disc head unit. That being said I would guesstimate it's right at about 10-12 RMS watts at 4 ohms.
Adding a 4 channel will make the sound quality clearer at higher volumes. It will do almost nothing for clarity at lower volumes unless the power delivery from the stock head unit is having problems. Adding an amp is defiantly a good up-grade but I wouldn't go spending a ton of money on the latest and greatest.
If it were me I would be searching CraigsList for a cheap simple 4 channel amp to drive those door speakers. I have an Alpine MRP-F250 driving some Pioneer Premier 6x8's in my 04 CC and it sounds pretty good. I think I picked it up on ebay for $40.
I put an amp on my CD6 and wasn't satisfied. Got a new head unit less than two months later. The stock head unit just doesn't produce good quality sound, so even amilified its still muddy sounding. Also, they filter out bass when you turn it up, so you have to compensate for that whenever you change volume.
