I have a 2005 F-150 5.4L Scab and I want to upgrade the sound without having to replace the headunit. Call me a dork, but I like it and it works fine for me. My question is, does anyone know how much I can upgrade my speakers without having to replace the headunit? Would an amp help or worsen the speaker headunit relationship? Any input is welcome! Thanks!
The factory speakers on the standard factory system will not handle a amp upgrade IMO. If you want to use an amp, I recommend buying the speakers and amp at the same time and get the dealer to advise on amp outputs, speaker sensitivity etc. I upgraded my head unit, but am not using an amp at this time. I bought the most sensitive speakers that were in my price range and at the top end I still get alittle speaker clipping. If I added a small amp to the mix I could probably eliminate that.
So, you think i can keep the headunit and just go for speakers and an amp? I can handle that. My main thing was I just didn't wanna lose the factory radio. Not to mention it helps deter people stealing my radio if it's factory!
I have the factory head unit and replaced the front door speakers with Infinity Kappa series with external crossover, and a set of Polks in the rear doors. Did not use an amp, and the sound quality just on the use of these speakers improved 1,000 fold. My only suggestion is use a lot of the quieting material ( Dynamat or similar). Better speakers will give you more bass and the doors will rattle without it.
I have an 04 Screw FX4 and I kept the headunit but changed all 4 door speakers with Memphis brand speakers with built in hi's. I agree with most of the other posts that suggest that the factory speakers couldn't handle an amp.
I also put a 10 inch JL sub under the back seat and hooked everything up to a kenwood 600 watt amp. I bought a prefabed box from a local dealership along with the speakers and amp. I let them install everything so I could be sure it was done right.
I installed Polk speakers in all 4 doors, they sound sweet, but not much bass. I'm thinking of adding an 8" or 10" JL Audio sub and an amp. Has anyone made or seen a sub setup under the arm rest somehow?

Just upgrading your speakers will help, however you should add an Amp to increase your flexibility. Without an AMP you have to concentrate on very sensitive speakers (Memphis Audio makes great products). Consider purchasing a RCA line converter (Converts speaker wires to RCA connectors for an AMP).
The amp will increase your options for speakers dramatically and sound 100% better.
wallaw, which memphis speakers are you using? I'm looking at maybe some for my doors. I looked at a maybe putting in a 10 in the new series they have and the first price I saw was over 1400 for the speaker alone. I'll be going a more economical route than that. Most of the other stuff is within range though.
Thanks
TRX250R87, I know that MTX makes a thunderform sub enclosure that comes with a 10" sub that fits under the rear driver side seat. I don't want to lose the storage space so I have been looking for a sub enclosure that fits under the center console as well. No luck so far.
I also want to replace the stock door speakers. They stink. I have not decided on what to replace them with though. I was thinking of a component setup up front and a mid in the rear. I will definitely be adding dynamat to the doors when I do up grade them. I will also be keeping the stock head unit and adding an amp to run it all.
See my sig. I replaced all my door speakers and retained the factory head unit. I also added a Bazooka tube under the rear seat. It sounds a million times better than it did. I do plan on adding a small 4 channel amp just to clean up the sound a little bit more. 75x4 amp should do the job nicely!
You guys that have or are going to add an amp, does anybody make one that has a wiring harness made for these trucks, or do you have to do cutting and splicing? I have a 06 F-150 with the single CD setup.
i did this with my budys ranger. we went to circuit city and they went on there computer and told us everything we needed, as fare as wiring harness and stuff
You wont have to cut into the factory harness. You can buy adapters that will plug into the factory wiring harness. The ones I have used are from Scoche. I got them at wally world. The only splicing you will have to do is to splice the radio wiring harness into the Scoche wiring adapters. It's really easy. I have used these on several vehicles. Good Luck.

As far as Iknow there is no harness for adding an amp to a factory setup. My Bazooka tube has an amp but I left all my speakers hooked up. I added a line level converter into the facory harness and the rear speaker leads. If your adding an amp for all your spaekers you will have to cut your factory harness for your line level converters and then run your amp speaker wires to your factory ones in the dash. You could also run new wire to all your speakers.
