Towing a 85 f150

Has anyone towed their 150 with 4 wheels down? I would like to pull mine short distances, 200-300 miles, behind my motorhome. It is a 85, 2wheel drive, 5.0fi, auto trans. Anything special that needs to be done?

Thanks

since its an auto you will have to at least pull the drive shaft out. or else you will burn up the trans.

I dont see any reason why you cant just put it in neutral.

Lack of oil, The output shaft bearing/bushing will be dry and it will ruin the transmission...

The drive line has to come out, you can tie it up to keep the yoke in the transmission if you trust that, I do not, I get another yoke and bungee it in place, I think they also make plastic plugs, never seen one, just heard.

Make sure you tape the U-Joint caps to prevent them from falling off.

It would be more expensive, but easier if you just back the rear wheels up on a dolly, and lock the steering wheel. They are right though, you cannot pull it without ruining the tranny. If it was 4wd, most of the time you can put the transfer case in neutral and flat tow them.

My understanding of why you can't just put it in neutral is that it's the torque converter's job
to pump the fluid (which provides lubrication to the internal parts) and, since it's not
operating (because the engine isn't running) the result is all those parts in the tranny are
turning with no lubrication.

Is this true?

No, The torque converter does not pump the fluid, there is a pump in the front of the transmission that keys to the torque converter and is turned by the torque converter, that pump provides fluid power and lubrication.

The rest you are correct.
If the motors not running no oil is being pumped to the bearings/bushings/etc...
